Just how will it tackle congestion? It'll just make it more expensive to do what you normally do.

Part of the governments plans to rollout total road charging in 2 years flat no doubt.

Taken to the n'th degree cars will purchased, used and paid for like a mobile phone. The car itself is essentially worthless to the individual because you won't be able to use it without having to pay for every inch they travel.
Of course the key difference - there'll be no 500mile monthly bundles because that would stop funding all the non-road related projects (as this is essentially a tax) the money would be spent on.

    Grrrrrr

I'll avoid such a system for as long as humanly possible.

Even if it means I pay more...

    Re: New Pay-As-You-Drive trial

The intention is for road charging to replace the current road tax and eventually it may replace a proportion, if not all fuel tax as well.
You'll be charged depending on the road you use, the time of day and the type of car you drive.
It will be a legal requirement to have a black-box fitted that will identify your car to the road network and tie it to you.
It's also a nice and easy way to impliment average speed cameras nationally - by using the black box.

Dislike the idea? I hate it.
It's a little like there is a patent need for the government to introduce everything we'd have laughed at doomsayers for suggesting ten years ago.
My main worry is that various transport bodies have suggested it's the only way to pay for our future road infrastructure so I'm sure all political parties will eventually back it - and eventually abuse it because it'll be so easy to do.

Ofc if they all back it there is no way for the voting public to be rid of it

Yup... time to do away with road tax and dump it on fuel. I'm getting pretty tiered of paying the flat charge of £200 a year to use the roads for a whole 2000 miles. And I'm tiered of propping up public transport when I live in an area that doesn't provide much of it.

Next thing they need to do is shove a big old congestion charge in all the built up areas and exempt transits

Yeah but who trust politicians enough the believe that. More likely it'll just be lumped on top.

Some sort of excuse like 'Low emissions vehicles don't have a road tax any more so it's fair' maybe?
