The paranoia of watching the MOT tester at work!

Having completely forgotten about the whole MOT thing, I had to nip the car in to a last minute appointment without doing any checking around myself first. Amusingly, the poster they've now brought out showing all the MOT checkpoints uses an Audi R8 as an example. Are they 3 years old yet?

A little tip. Never watch the MOT tester at work. Every time they pause you start to wonder what they could have possibly spotted in that area. The guy took rather a long time with a wire brush on the trailing arms this time, I knew the brake pipes where going to get an honourable mention. I also held my breath as he tapped at the numberplate lamp

Of course, the best bit is the brake test. Can't do my car on rollers so they have to put the little meter thing on the dash and test it on the road. 2 years in a row somebody's moaned about neck pain

Bit of a misunderstanding as to what engine I have for the emissions test too. Must've been a 91 build car registered in late 92 *ahem* And, sadly, the engine code has rubbed off with no help from a hitachi grinder. Oh wel, no cat test then.

At the moment, my '92 XR4x4 that is back in service.

I WAS trying to garage it for a few months to get the underside cleaned and sealed and start work on a better engine but it keeps prooving too useful.

Only bought it as a stop gap... that was 3 1/2 years ago I think!

I'd go back and have a word in his ear. THE only tool they're allowed to use is the CAT - corrosion assessment tool - AKA the plastic hammer.

He wasn't looking for corrosion on the actual arms (it not being a calibra ), just removing the crap so he could see the brake pipes where they run along the back.

All in my interest really, i'll grease them up for now and replace them when it's warm.

but that's my point; He's NOT allowed to remove any of the crap. If you can't inspect, you have to assume all is good, or note it on an advisory form.

Now whilst I appreciate he's actually being thorough and applaud him for it, what he's doing could in theory, land him in bother. Depending on the V.I's local man (and there's some real jobsworth ones), logic, customer service and common sense are all things that do not apply at the time of testing. Its black and white, follow the rules.

Half the reason I gave up MOT testing was due to the utter stupidity of the VI!

That makes rather a lot of room for some gaffa tape modifications to enable a pass doesn't it?

Re: The paranoia of watching the MOT tester at work!

I sit there, alone with my thoughts, oblivious to the world around me.
Only the slight of an oily boot purposefully striding into my field of vision, it's owner poker faced but eyes twinkling, is enough to wake me from my reverie.

My eyes flit to and fro searching for that tell-tale red sheet that spells ££££.

Turning he smiles and pauses, the air going still, your wallet seeming to relish the moment to before he passes final judgment .....

Re: The paranoia of watching the MOT tester at work!

When we get our 1972 Triumph TR6 MOT'd, my dad has to drive it onto the ramp and the rolling road because the man at the garage doesn't fit in it to easily! We watch him and talk to him while he does it. He does it quickly. If there is a problem, he'll fix it there and then and not fail us!
