Guess who's popped a drive shaft today?

and after less than 3 miles, had to get towed back to the prep shop in his rally car

OH welll.....£1700 of Quaiffe bear kit, and torque distributing diff.......I did just voer 3 miles....and its QUICK

Not fast....it tops out at about 90 (guess...I'll compare it with a road car another day to match the speedo..) BUT.....standing start.....road tyres (not very good ones either) and 5000 revs and a nice quick but not harsh start.

Zero drive....well a little bit....the diff was trying to put a few percent to the other shaft....

    but...

Its gone all wobbly...thats drive shaft must have been a candle

Anyway.....I've left it with Dave...he can now pop the shaft back out, see where its broken or just come adrift...and then get a couple of new ones.

Sods law innit..... just as you think its done.....the unexpected. Its not a fast engine.....just over 100bhp...but with a 4.8 final drive (that means REVS IT ARSE OFF) and a very low 1st.....plus a sticky diff.....

it was a bit much for the poor old girl

Gonna watch tv....had enough for one day..and its only 12:20.

If it makes you feel any better Zak, one of the newer guys in the 4x4 club ripped his whole front axle off a couple of trials ago.. the whole thing.. radius arms just sheared the retaining bolts and the thing ended up bellying out on it's own front wheels Had to get picked up by Al's digger and dumped onto a trailer lol

I have got the bust bit now....on the end of the drive shaft...in the diff end....there is a little milled bit on the end of the shaft....a clip goes around it to keep the shaft in the hole...

its about 3 mill from the end....like a recess all the way around the shaft.

the whole thing came off the end of the shaft

the clip is not broken, I found it in the casing and its unbroken...

the END of the shaft has popped off.....I mean.....L reg.....1994.....a decade of driving...and rather than the shaft crack midway or bend of even shatter....

    the end fell off

unreal....but its sorted.....and its SO FAST!!!

Speedo is a no goer at the mo.,....the roll cage is behind the dash and stops the cable reaching the head

BUT.....running parrallel with a road car......quick flash of the headlamps to indicate we were both doing 60mph..check the rev counter in 5th...

60 mph (indicated 62 on the road car for a good chance of actually DOING nearly 60)

    4250 revs....

    SO.....7000 rpm limit....just under 100mph.

Nice....and does it feel like it?

    Cant' say...its secret

If you want a cheap and surprisingly accurate speedo, get hold of.....

    a push bike speedo!

Now, after you've picked yourself up off the floor and stopped laughing, let me tell you about bike speedo's.

They measure up to about 150 MPH (WTF!!! who's peddling? Billy Whizz?)
They're dealy accurate, cos you use the rolling radius of the tyre.
They have other fab feature such as a stop watch that doesn't start till the wheels are moving (I'm SURE you'd find a use for that... )

Yeah, you can't argue with a bike speedo. They're a bit slow to update is the only problem, but you can't really argue for a tenner or less.
