    Mobile Speed cameras

I think I got snapped by one this morning coming into work, I was going a bit over the limit, saw it and slowed down.

I wasn't pulled over or anything and I don't think it was much over the limit when I saw it.

What are the chances it's just a £60 + 3 points? Does anyone know what the leniency is like for someone with no previous points?

If its fixed penalty then standard fine and three points. If it goes to court, it will depend on circumstances - however you will get a discount for an early guilty plea.

Rule of thumb for prosecution/penalty is 10% +2 over the limit. Over 100 is generally an automatic ban.

    Re: Mobile Speed cameras

I don't think there is leniency towards speeding, like you say it's £60 plus 3 points I think. It's the 3 points that will hurt more in the long run I presume, likely to put insurance up?

    Re: Mobile Speed cameras

I recently got caught by a mobile camera.

3/4 days later I recieved the NIP.

Basically I had 28 days to reply with who was driving the car.

I now have to wait to see what happens.

Worst case it is £60 fine + 3 points.

Best case is a speed awareness type course, which usually costs £100, but means I will get no points on my licence.

I dont have any points currently, and I wasnt speeding excessively.

From what I have read usually if its a first offence and you werent going over a certain threashold.
E.g 45 in a 30, 60 in a 40, etc then depending on which force got you, they will offer a course.

I could be ok then, I think my speedo said 35 when I saw it, but I know it's a little off (in that it was probably about 32/33)

Guy, do the Berk police force offer the course do you know?

I wish this was always the case. I got done for doing 33 in a 30 and got 3 points and £60 fine that was over 5 years ago, since then I haven't been done for speeding, the sat nav helps though as a little reminder to check the old speedo when driving around town.

Yep Thames Valley do offer a speed awarenss course, a friend of mine got caught a month or 2 ago. She had the option of a course or the fine + points.

It lasted 3 or 4 hours I think, and took place at the comfort Inn, on the A4 between Theale and Aldermaston.

From what I have seen if it is your first offence, and you havent attended a similar course within the past 3 years, they are more leaning towards trying to educate rather than cash in.
It is all entirely discressionary though, they may offer a course, they may not.

I hope Hampshire do the right thing and let me attend

Northumbria Police are muppets up here though and will fine most the time instead of the courses. My brother was the best though he got done doing 31 in a 30 and went to court over it as he was marginally over. Judge wasn't having a good day and gave him the points anyway :/

If you're not much over the limit and it's the first offence my money is on the speed awareness course being offered (it's voluntary).

    Re: Mobile Speed cameras

I'm not sure if you automatically get offered a speed awareness course. If you were only a bit over the speed limit and it's your first time you may get lucky.
Let's face it, they are not really there to get you to slow down the non-profitable speed cameras in places are not being used any more in favour of mobile cameras.
Unfortunately you have probably been caught and it will cost you one way or another.

What a load of rubbish.. I wouldn't let that stick it's complete nonsense. There is no way you can responsible for making sure you're not doing 1 or 2 over/under without doing exactly what you aren't supposed to do.. watch the speedo.

Incidently I thought I'd be caught a few times recently but no nips.. touch wood.

That's why he went to court, Hell I was done for doing 33 in a 30 and he was done a whole three weeks later on the same road but this time the van was parked behind a wall on the grass verge so you couldn't see it all travelling away from it.

He went to court, argued it and at the end the Judge gave him the 3 points and £60 fine plus the court costs on top. He appealed it and was found to have the original judgement stand. It is scary how bad the local police here are with the camera's there are a number of lads on local cruise forums saying they have court days for 31/32 in a 30. Like you said Steve, you can't drive around watching the clock all the time. Imagine if you hit a kid driving down a street and you pulled the excuse you were watching the speedo in case you got caught from a camera. It's a joke tbh.

This was all around 5 years ago so nothing to be done with it now, but I know very few people that got the speed awareness course around here, the majority just get the points.

    Re: Mobile Speed cameras

That's why I prefer average speed checks - you don't have to watch the speedo at all. If you aim to drive at 30 then your average speed is likely to be 30, even if there are points when you go over and under - they'll cancel each other out.

    Re: Mobile Speed cameras

after my £60 speed awareness course lasting 3 hours i was told the 10% rule does apply, but its down to the area chief super as to the + rule, leicester is 10% + 3, peterbourgh or more precise huntington is 10% +0

afaik speed courses are only for those in a 30 zone doing less than 39mph, once every 3 years.

keep your fingers crossed your cars speedo is like the van and shows you going 2mph faster than you are

Bad luck - hope you haven't been caught. Thanks for the tip-off too - I didn't know that was a favoured spot for the mobile camera. I just thought it might have been the camera on Vastern Rd as I saw it this morning on my way to work and tried to get over 30 mph to get caught (on my push bike!). Got to 27mph and then gave up in a sweaty mess.
