A serious idea might be exactly as Zak says - Megane/306, possibly the diesel turbo varients. Good on insurance, handle like dreams and the Megane's got some of the best brakes I've ever felt.

I'd say something around the 306/Megan area would be good, both are good cars.

I'd suggest a 206 although it maybe just out of the £4k price range.

I have a 5dr 1.6 1997 306, and its pretty damn fun to drive Not too sure what the insurance will be like for ya though :x
