    Vauxhall vectra 2.2 petrol 150 2000

The above has developed an intermittent fault where the car revs up and cuts out. Once restarted the car will travel about 50 yards and cuts out again.

By the time the car is plugged into a computer, the car is running ok, the computer states that it is a throttle body fault.

Been told may not be the throttle body. Also pattern cat fitted avout 6 mths ago, rear tail pipe is rattling.

Any ideas, before i spend a load of money replacing throttle body, tail pipe and cat??????

it's a little odd you picked a mainly tech forum for this sort of post but anyway...

you say when it's code read, it's indicating a TB fault... I'm curious, what fault code was read?

Pattern Cats are notoriously poor quality and as far as I'm aware, there's an industry standard being introduced to help raise the quality of cats being sold, pattern and OEM.

Anyway, I digress... post up the fault code(s) you've had read and we can take it from there.

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately I do not have the code. The technician has 25-30 year experience and is not convinced that the TB is the cause of the breakdowns. Since the bad weather unforntuately we have not used the car, but since the first fault occured TB was cleaned and the second time fault occured car would run without cutting out but continually reved. Have fitted a new set of plugs and so far the fault has not occured.

Sounds like a MAF fault, though that should throw its own fault code, or a split in the intake pipe?

Dave - MAF faults don't generally cause the car to cut out completley, more a slouch in performance, fuel & air would still be getting through even with a MAF fault..... as far as codes are concerned, although MAF's don't generate a code themselves 'as such', they will generate an short to ground or similar when disconnected whilst the engine's running.

@ the OP , your tech has 25-30 years expreience but he doesn't have a fault code? I'm lost bud, is this guy an independant or...?

Highly doubt the plugs have resolve the issue you've experienced

sounds a bit like the cat is knackered and instead of being in its own place, is in the back box flying around like a tennis ball blocking the exhaust gas flow....
