not BMW for me....not enough car for your dough and then....lots of dough for maintenance.

I'd be looking Japanese if I were you.

    Unhappy

yeah, we got CR-V right now, and i had a Integra Type R before, so was looking at the Honda's, the only lude i like is the 5th Gen 2.2 and there either 100k milers, or more than i can afford ...

As long as you dont take any mint mk4 2.2 vtec preludes away from me you can take anything you want I'll have one of em when insurance goes down. In fact 4th gen had a decent number of examples with decent mileage and price in autotrader.

    Celica maybe?

Just been pondering a similar prob. I have a Focus ST170. Fun to drive but a bit of a gas guzzler and as I work away from home it's killing me in petrol costs so it looks like it's time to bite the bullet and head off to the diesel side of the showroom. Then I thought about it....how many cars have I actually owned outright?....None. always paying for one. So I'm gonna look at lease hire of a BMW 330d. No maintenance costs cuz they do that. End of the term give it back and go look at another one. Same performance as my ST170 plus diesel mileage. Just got to see what it's going to cost me against what I already spend. So far it's looking like a winner.

Its 37th in the top gear 50 worst cars of all time book:
"One of the few cars to make you violently sick before you even get in the thing. Never mind owning one, if you so much as know anyone who drives one of these naff little machines then your copy of Top Gear needs to be confiscated. Not even remotely sporty, not even remotely attractive, gloomy interrior and not a patch even on the ghastly Nissan Sunny it's based on, the 100NX was a mercifully short lived abomination."

If you decide against coupes my car is now worth 3.5k.
It's not for sale but if you can find one:
    Civic 1.8 VTi 5dr
    169bhp std
    8000rpm
    Carries your mates + kit
    80k miles (in my case)
    It's a goddamn Q-car

Other than that a lude, sx, crx, corrado, fto and there are probably plenty of others.
ITR's are a bit expensive still (6k+) and anything bigger (supra, gto, skyline) costs a)loads to run & b)loads to insure. You can get the oldest Impreza's I'd guess but fuel, servicing schedule (every other day) and insurance should scare you senseless.

What about a Citroen Xsara VTS?

Ok, so it sounds naff, but it's really a 306 GTi-6 in drag, with a faster 5 speed box. You've got 170bhp on tap, it's a Coupe, it's loaded with climate control, rain sensing wipers, full electrics, CD changer, etc etc. Becuase it shares the important bits with the 306 you get great handling, but becuase some of the bits are different, you get a far more modern interior.

They are not very well known and not as popular as the 306. This means that they are worth less, and you can pick up some fantastic bargains. Your budget should see T, V and W plate examples within your reach.

If you get a BMW, you'lle be looking at M and N, ditto Preludes. Much newer car for the cash.
