Anything under 10sec to 60 will be expensive on the insurance!
Trust me mate, i really want to replace my fiesta but i need to hold onto it until i can afford something better. Im hoping for under 8sec to 60 in my next car though.
Edit: the closest you might find that fits the bill is an old Fabia vRS. If you can get a bargain on one of them you could it for under £3000 but it will have done a lot of miles.
Edit 2: How about a Mark 4 golf GT TDI. There is a 110 a 115 and a 130BHP model, any of them would probably do and you can pick them up under £2k as long as you dont mind a bit of hunting and a lot of miles on the clock.
I paid £2500 for my 2000 A4 1.8T Sport that will do it in around 8.5
Seat Leon Cupra/Ibiza Cupra should do the job
Biscuit: Maybe not, my A4 costs less to insure fully comp than my 97 Accord 1.8i (nothing sporty about that) did 3PFT, the A4 is considerably faster and sportier
Few cars off the top of my head that would be roughly in range...
BMW 323 possibly
Civic 1.8 VTi (Madduck would know most about Civics)
Possibly an old MR2
Lexus with a 3l
Subaru Impreza around the north east can be had for around 1000-1500
Even an old volvo with a 2.4T engine like a C70 will get the job done that you asked
You really need to know the kind of car you want, small hatch, sporty coupe (even an MX5 if you fancy starting a mid life crisis 20 years early ), motorway cruiser
Hatches (especially hot hatches) are generally more to insure than saloons, you can use that to your advantage and get a decently quick saloon which is cheaper to insure than a slower hatch would be.
£4000 taken out over 3 years is likely to cost you around the £140 mark each month (assuming a rate of around 7%). Add in your insurance at around £80 a month, and you are coming in at very rough figures of £200-£220 a month for the car If you take it over longer then it can be cheaper per month, but that depends how long you want to keep the car.
If I were you i'd wait 1 year and go and look at a brand new polo on a PCP deal. Why? It's cheaper! You can get free insurance for the first year (this is why you need to wait until you hit 21), and then the monthly repayments would be £160 a month..over 3 years.
They will take your old car as a deposit, and if you save up £500 over the year..which you can do easily from the sounds of it, that monthly payment will start to drop.
Just something to think about..and if you save up a bigger deposit you can even start to look at bigger/better cars like a golf or Audi A1.
Just a thought anyway
Worth looking at an Alfa 147. They can be had for a pittance because the motoring public has the perception that Alfas are unreliable. (They're not. I've had to spend more on my diesel Mondeo in the last 6 months than I have on my Alfa which I've had longer. The older Alfas had a reputation for fragility but the 147 is as reliable as anything else)
Mine is a 150bhp 2litre petrol which is a joy to drive. They also do a very good common rail diesel (the JTD models) which will give around 50mpg.

"Free speech includes not only the inoffensive but the irritating, the contentious, the eccentric, the heretical, the unwelcome and the provocative provided it does not tend to provoke violence. Freedom only to speak inoffensively is not worth having."
Well I did it with an Audi A1 so it's slightly different - as when I specced out the Polo I wanted originally, the A1 worked out cheaper month on month based on the exceptionally high residuals that it offers. I've posted about this sort of thing before
These PCP deals are direct from the VAG garages - none of the brokers could get me a better deal. I know for a fact that VW manchester offer the 3 year PCP with 1 years free insurance on a Polo..its only the 75ps version thats at £150 a month, but still..for a brand new car it's a good deal. Without trying to repeat my previous audi advertising, you can get the A1 sport TDI for £199 a month if you put down a £2k deposit. Or £240 a month for the A1 sport 1.4 TFSI with some extras, again with that £2k deposit (can be part ex - I got £2k for my 54 plate 206, and added £500 cash myself). 8.9s 0-60, and insurance is £800 for me (26, living in north manchester which has exceptionally high premiums).
Whilst I am gainfully employed I will be sticking with PCP deals..yes you are forced to change your car every X years, however if you choose the right models then it's much much cheaper than a standard loan. You never actually own it but at this point in my life that's not so important to me. Car's never really give you equity , and I think most people forget that.

To be honest after you're advice (all of you) I'm either going to mk2 golf driver 1.6, or look deeper into a saloon. I do love the old Saab 900's with the aero bodykit. When I was living at home instead of using his 335i he bought a Saab 900 turbo with an adjustable aftermarket turbo and kitted with numerous other things giving it 320(ish) brake. Fell in love with that.
