The reason I ask is because mine let go again the other day - the EGR valve popped again, and the bod fixing it just blanked it off. Just wondering what the long term implications of this would be?

That's not specific to Fiat engines, just EGR blanking in general.
less crap getting back into the manifold, now all it sucks in is air straight from the filter instead of fumes sucked back in from the exhaust, the guys stopped a lot of problems by doing that!
vauxhall have an official blanking plate for the astra mum used to have, fitted myself for a fiver then a £30 reflash to remove it from the ECU.

Increased burn temperatures, so higher NOx production in the reaction. This will lead to increased degradation of the cat, which will eventually lead to MOT emissions problems. But that's very long term!
