    Takeaway insurance?

Right basically my sister is going to be working for a Chinese takeaway (car) but she doesn't know what insurance she needs, i cant seem to find much relevant information on the net so was wondering if anyone had some information? I presumed business insurance but its not her business so i think that wouldn't be right.

When she said she was going to work at the Chinese, her insurer promptly said that her renewal of £300 was now invalid and that they cant insurer her due to her age and requiring business insurance! So yeah she is baffled by it, she is 22.

    Any helps appreciated!

tricky one, what do the other drivers do or have insurance with?

id also try ringing again as being 22 and un-insurable for one type of insurance seems like waffle though im no expert.

seems as though commercial insurance isnt cheap aswell

    Re: Takeaway insurance?

Business insurance also covers you for use of your car for your employers business (anything beyond driving to work). My wife works for the council and drives to visit various customers sites, we have to have business usage on the car insurance policy, her employer also checks up on this.

    Re: Takeaway insurance?

Thats the same question i saw online .

Not a clue what the other drivers do, presumably they dont have it insured... not being racial but the owners arent very legitimate as say a place like dominos , nice people but alot off the books etc! However i shall try and find out.

Looks like someone else will need to be the insurer then, the unfortunate thing is that she looked else where and it was ~£750! Almost double what she would have been paying and shes on benefits (single mum), currently at college doing a course and this is merely to help pay for things. So i guess its a lose lose situation so far, may have to look elsewhere for a small job!

    Re: Takeaway insurance?

Flibb's right - if she's using her car for business then she needs to add business use, which will increase the premium depending on the job - takeaway delivery probably increasing it quite a lot.

If she's just using it to travel to a place of work, ie commuting, then she just needs commuting use. The job will still affect the premium, and could lead to renewal refusal.

The takeaway firm should get some pool cars or pay for driver's business insurance premium themselves - there are some tax advantages for doing so iirc.

Of course, the problem is that it will cost a lot of money. If a takeaway firm took no interest in whether their casual labour had the correct insurance on their cars, it would save everybody a lot of money. And I suspect at least in some circumstances, that's what happens.

    Re: Takeaway insurance?

I have just re-insured my car (including business use). Several firms specifically excluded delivery business and courier business use from business. It pays to read the small print before you have an accident and find you are not covered.

As someone who worked for more than one takeaway when I was younger, I can confirm this is exactly what happens.

22 and a delivery driver, nah forget it, she will probably lose money at that age with the price of insurance.

    Re: Takeaway insurance?

    An update, finally been resolved!

After an hour + on the phone to Churchill they finally ended up saying that her terms already covered her for business type one insurance (when before they were saying no its impossible etc!), shes got them to confirm its in the T&C about 4 times on the phone as she wasnt taking any chances, apparently she will get the documents in the next week with the specific T&C clause highlighted for her.

Ended up costing £410 in total, original quote was £350 (corrected my £300 ), but thats fair as she had to up her mileage by like double and that made ~£10 increase and having business cover along with getting no claims protection (now has 5 years) so a reasonable price for peace of mind being legal and having protection on claims .

Still shouldnt have taken that long for Churchill to agree it was fine especially when they said a big fat no originally!
