Just remembered about Hammonds race in the rover v8. The roll on that car compared to all the others... I think he did quite well to keep up with the other rover.

Also, the race between him and clarkson - they took some very different lines on the track in that race. Made me wonder, that.

I noticed that; seems like the Skoda is VERY solid but needs work on the brakes and suspension - it wibbled rather a lot.

Easy enough to sort out with an aftermarket kit. I guess that pushes the price up a bit though.

Diesels are getting better, and some are really good.

I would quite happily take a diesel BMW 530 or 330.

Or how about the V10 diesel in VW Touraeg? If the engine is as fast and refined as a petrol, costs the same and is more economical i can't see it as being a bad thing.

If it has the sins of the diesel engine - fine, but some are getting very good.

I agree completely, actually, and did you see the TG epsiode where they drove that rather mad Audi to Edinburgh and back on a single tank?

Comparing the diesel van at work to my boss's Audi A4 1.9 TDi the difference is just staggering... I'd say within a year or two diesels will match the performance of a petrol and will be more economical too. They aren't that far behind even now.

Considering a lot of the european countries have switched to diesels we wont be too far behind.

Don't forget that the diesel is also turbocharged... Hence why it's got such a huge wodge of torque at the upper end which helped on the straights.

Mini is only N/A. Turbo that then it's another matter...

Yes, but it was the same price, innit. If a mini was turbocharged it would be a good couple grand more.

Considering they manage to make a turbo-dieseled car withing the price of a petrol competing model I think they've done well.
