Points on licence - When do they come off insurance????

Just realised that in 2 days it will be 4 years since my speeding ticket and 3 points on my licence.

According to the DVLA, i can now remove them from my licence

How about my insurance. When i re-new will i have to declare them or not. I have heard rumors that its 5 years for insurance.

Any one got any experience with this???

Very much depends as GoNz0 says, you'll just have to see when you fill in quotes. 3/5/7 years...

3 years for totting up, 4 years on driving licence and 5 years for insurance companies.

I was told by a broker that 3 points for speeding didn't really make much difference, as they expect us all to get caught at least once. Although maybe it depends what kind of speeding. Mine was 88 in a 70, 88 in a 30 might be a bit more severe when the next renewal comes in...

88 in a 30 is not 3 points, its a ban if you go double the limit or over 100

Sadly insurance DOES take your first 3 points seriously. Now that most police forces give you a speed awareness course if caught between 10% + 2/3 and 10% + 6 (I think) instead of points. When you do get points insurers now assume you have been caught already, done the awareness course and have now been caught a second time due to the points.

3 points for me (got then before the introduction of speed courses) added around 15% to my insurance. I had to go to a specialist/small insurer called greenlight to get the insurance for a reasonable amount.

1 speed awareness course every 3 years, no need to declare it to insurers.

I must admit, my points were about 17 years ago, and I didn't have my own car until 2 years after I'd got them. at that time, the companies were telling me '3 points doesn't make a lot of difference'. So the lesson is, do your speeding in the 90s. The decade, I mean, not the speed.

Look like I need to find an insurer that will go for 4 years.

My other 3 points clear in October and my renewal isn't unitl November.

Chuffed that finally my 6 points will be gone from my licence.

Those with 3 points +, avoid the man stream insurance companies. Stick to small brokers, and lesser known companies. The big comparison sites all use the same weighted values & assumptions.

Ask on pistonheads and car forums. The three individual broker i rang were a recommended by briskoda (will find them when I'm soberer) all came out cheaper then three top comparison sites found.

Don't think 7 is enforceable - after 5 years, under the rehabilitation of offenders act, you can legally not mention that you had a previous conviction for speeding (assuming it was just a fine and points).

I spoke to a guy at work who is well learned about cars ( he's a 60 year old petrol head ) and he says that if your points are spent and you send your license in to get the spent points removed, you do not have to declare them to the insurance company. If the spent points are still on your license, you can declare them however the insurance companies should penalise you for them as they are spent.

I should have them off my licence before renewal and hopefully see cheaper insurance.
