    socket set wanted

everyone seems to point to halfrauds pro socket sets due to the warranty, I dont want to spend more than £100 on a kit so throwing it out the the hexus mechanics ?

relaly can't be arsed to struggle with the upcoming rear brake backplate swap on the bmw as it involves drive shaft removal and bearing swap...

i have the specialist tools needed (renting the bearing kit) but decided it's time to get a full socket set instead of the mess i have.

    Re: socket set wanted

Where did you rent the bearing press from? got mine to do on the rears at some point when I can get the car in to the garage to replace the rear bolts that are seized (no torch and I'd rather not mess it up, and in typical fashion I bought the bits before I realised I needed to do the bearings too!)

    Re: socket set wanted

The Halfords ones are excellent and often come up on a deal at half price for 100 quid. They are worth every penny If you're not in a rush, keep an eye out.

I know it's 30 quid more than you want to spend, but that really is a good kit. I'm just trying to see if there are any additional vouchers floating about for it as you can sometimes find them on the web.

    Re: socket set wanted

No worries, would be taking it up to Berwick to do the work anyway so wanted to see if it's a national hire place

As I mentioned in the PM it's not for a bmw but an old A4, going to ask my mechanic if he will do it, it's a bit of an ask but it's not like I'm asking him to do all of it, just some labour + parts

    and these spanners

and don't totally ignore Silverline,... it's budget but this is a monster... it's worthy

    Re: socket set wanted

you could also get really lucky like I did and have an ageing father in law that decides on a whim to give you all his tools including a very high quality 1/2 inch drive set.

But all joking aside draper make some really good tools.

As with a lot of things you get what you pay for so I would try to extend your budget a bit and get a good quality set that will last.

I have had far too many cheaper sets decide to fail me just as I needed them the most to fall into that trap again.

Plus you also need to look at the application you will be using them for,if you are just going to be doing light and basic repairs then a lower end 3/8 drive set will do, however if you are going to be doing high torque and heavy repairs then a good quality 1/2 inch drive set is a must.

If you scrimp on your tools you will only regret it in the end.

    Re: socket set wanted

Both Draper and Silverline are hit and miss. The car stands for example are fine (I have them, but mine are red), but some of their sockets are pants. The hard part is knowing what's decent and what's rubbish as both companies effectively re-brand stuff from China / where ever which vastly varies in quality.

Silverline sanding pads are excellent (use them with my Ryobi hand sander all the time). The torque wrench linked by Zak is also okay - I have that too! (and a smaller, finer one, can't remember brand though).

You can normally find the crap ones by checking feedback on Ebay, where both Silverline and Draper stuff can be had for cheap.

    Re: socket set wanted

I prefer using 6 sided sockets, less likely to round off any stubborn heads

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-48854...5722031&sr=1-2

Personally, I've got no need for the Halfords massive set, I only do the odd thing like fluid changes / brake changes

    I like the Clark ratchets

    http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/se...ategory/page/1

They also sell socket sets on machinemart

    http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/ca...e-hand-tools-2

Seem to be cheaper than Amazon

just bought the vortex kit zak, after thinking about it i have an old britool 1/2" socket set, way older than me and probably my dad & it's still going strong, figured i would be best getting the 3/8th kit but kinda like the look of the vortex as the handbrake adjuster on the bmw is a bitch to do so this will be spot on for the weekends missions!

i also have a bag of spanners so i will make do with those for now, best thing is the boss has agreed to go half's on a decent socket set

oh and i got that silverline torque wrench last year

funny thing is the Asus ROG Xonar Phoebus 7.1 PCI Express Soundcard fell in the basket at the same time.. oops

Zak, have you tried the vortex set ?
it arrived today and i thought half the parts were missing due to the weight, i opened it and found everything there, trouble is the walls are so thin nothing stands a chance its utter crap, how they got the expert name to it i dont know!

needless to say its heading back to amazon ASAP.
