25th Anniversary Edition Golf - Recall

Was having a chat with my Dad today about his Anniversary Edition Golf GTI. For those who don't know this was a 25th Anniversary MkIV Special Edition GTI armed with 180bhp petrol or 150bhp diesel, lowered, body kit & 18" Chrome Alloy Wheels.
It's a lovely motor and it's reported that the diesels (like his) has been known to have more than the specced 150bhp, some have been dyno'ed at 170+.

Anyway his car has been recalled to have ALL the wheels replaced after mould started to appear. His dealer said it was a general recal so this is for those who either own one or are thinking of picking one up second-hand

wonder who makes the wheels? VW had trouble with alloys before...but it was long long ago.

Remember the Pirelli wheels on Gold GTi's? With the black shadowing in the recess? They flaked badly and the flaked laquer went mouldy (real green mould)

They're BBS Alloys - special ones made exclusively for VW for the 25th Anniversary...

The reason I ask if there's more info is that I didn't realise it was a general recall, I know that a large number of owners have had major problems with them, but getting them replaced has always been hit and miss...



Don't know if he has anything wrong on his, but I will get him to check, also he's not sure if he would find out if there was a recall either as it's a company lease car...

Barakka my Dads is the TDI version so I suggest you get your friend to have a chat with VW.

Jiff it's mould apparently. I'd guess there's something in the Chrome that encourages its growth. I've heard of going green but this is taking a step further!

Its a problem with the finish on the wheels, as far as I know theres been no recall, loads of people have really struggled to get replacement wheels through their dealers some have been lucky and replacements (some people i know have had 2 sets) But some have been turned down.

It doesn't affect mine skii, as they are the standard finish

All Chrome wheels will corrode in the british weather - which is why it's a blummin daft idea to have them as all the boy racers are finding out...

Even at 57 he's talking about the end of his warranty and 'cheap' chips & tweeks to drag 250bhp out of the diesel. Must be something in his former life he didn't get round to doing.
