Yaris needs new CAT - is this covered by dealer?

Hello,

I bought a 2003 Yaris s/h, 2-3 months ago (around the 1st of August), would the CAT failing / needing replacing be covered by the dealers warranty? Or should it? (Autotrader/dealer)

The part is £200 then fitting would make it cost about £380 to repair.

Depends what the warranty is/says!

The car was as described when you bought it then there's no recourse under sale of goods act, so it would have to be warranty.

Look on the upside, if the worst does happen and you have to replace it, you can sell the old cat and get a bit of money back since they're valuable as scrap.

Do you have a warranty agreement? if not I doubt it. If I were you I would buy a cat from ebay (about £100), but check your local motor factor first for a price. £180 to fit it is a joke to be honest. A local garage will do i for between £30 & £50. its only 2 bolts and a clamp. Only think that would justify the £180 is if they replace the lamda sensors too. As above cats are worth money but yours would be quite small, you may get about £20 back if its genuine.

Hi, thanks for the replies, the CAT is part of the exhaust manifold from the engine, and the manifold (where it connects to the engine) has rusted away leaving holes where other air can get in and this causes faults on the CATs sensor. I don't know whether it would be possible to fit a gasket in between the engine and the exhaust manifold, but suspect that if the manifold (and CAT) is removed then the manifold will crumble and break as it's mostly just rust.

So have you got the engine management light on? has the manafold completely rusted or or is the air just getting in past the manafold gasket. i.e the gasket has rotted away. if thats the case, your just looking at a new gasket, around £15 and a new lambda sensor £50 for an NTK. I advise NTK as they are what the manufacture's use.

The engine light came on, and it was reset when the garage were looking at it. It hasn't come back on. It's mainly the manifold that has rusted leaving gaps.
