Re: What's your car history ?

Started with a 1986 Ford Escort. Cost me £600 and another £600 to insure. It had... character. It had a ford VV carb which was awful, I did replace the auto choke with a manual one which was better. It didn't like to idle when cold, or sometimes when warm. It was usually too weak so at less than 3000 revs if you tried to accelerate up hill it just coughed and got slower, BUT, at more than 3000 revs it misfired. The end result of this is that it wouldn't go up hills. Not a great problem is Norfolk but did cause some comedy when me and the wife drove round Scotland. Including having to use the crawler lane up a hill and getting overtaken by big lorries.

We then had our first child and decided to get a slightly safer car, so we had a Daewoo Nubira. Great car, had no problems with it at all.

Then added an R reg Rover 420 diesal. That did okay although it did end up needing a new head, then the fuel pump sprung a leak, got fixed, leaked again, got fixed but the timing wasn't right. Was never the same after that.

The Nubira then got replaced by a Zafira, which then got replaced by a Zafira GSI. Not been a bad car but has needed a few expensive items. I do enjoy a good session of boy racer bating though.

The Rover has now been replaced by a petrol Rover 45. Now standing at 55000 miles, or as I normally refer to it, head gasket -5000. Not sure if we are going to replace it or fix it when the inevitable happens. Of course, the wife wants it to be replaced with something cheap because she uses the Zafira, I would like to replace it with something like a Jag X type. @ajones, don't suppose I can borrow yours, see if she decides she'd like one too?

Interesting to see how many petrolheads we have ! I do have a theory on this though.
If you read the language people use for their cars/bikes and for their PCs it's very similar. Almost a tribal identifier. Why is it that females are less susceptible ?

Hmm, sounds like a similar situation to me. Wife's got new Focus, I don't need new car. As long as they're happy...

Re: What's your car history ?

    An interesting mix of motors.

    1st - '88 Austin Metro (dark blue) in '95
2nd - '89 Austin Metro (light blue) in '97-ish had to get shot due to the four speed gearbox costing too much for the commute to uni, loved both Metro's though.
3rd - '88 Pug 205 1.8d, one of the best handling cars I've driven monstered everything on snow, got rid in the end after it threw a piston and punched a 50p sized hole through the engine case, after an engine swap (taken from a diesel Citroen van from the local scrapyard) it was never quite the same on fuel economy. As it happened came up behind it a couple of years later and the suspension had collapsed on the passenger side.
4th - MKI Clio, great economy but handling was scarily numb, never really felt as if it was going to go round corners.
5th - '96 Rover 214SEi (Wedge) - One of the least troublesome cars I've owned and got me the taste for the little luxuries such as leather... well half leather anyway and electric windows.
6th - '98 Rover 200 Coupe - Owned for nigh on nine years (and wanted long before I'd past my test in Jan '95) and loved it most of that time though I shudder to think of how much it has cost me in parts and more than a few skinned knuckles. Aiming to take it off the road for a year or two and run a 350z roadster (while I can afford to) and do a bit of restoration on it (more thanthe car will ever likely be worth but the heart wants what the heart wants).

On Autotrader. Full spec A8L 56 plate with 60k on the car, full Audi service and warranty on it (although I chose not to extended the warranty further as it jumps up after the 6 years ). It has the petrol V8 so if you wanted the diesel, you can add a further 2k for the 3.0D or 5k for the 4.2 V8 diesel. I went for the cheaper option. I was also helped by the Merc getting a 5K trade in value so that car only cost me 1k in depreciation over the 2 years.

I was working a 2 year contract in Texas, so got a Mustang whilst I was there - speeding ticket magnet. Almost bought a 66 Stingray.... stupidly passed it up though . The Mondeo was a runabout when I returned.

I can't join in with them all... it's not viable.

    But the better ones were:

    TR7 rally car
    Nova GSi
    Skoda Favorit Rally Car
    Astra Mk3 Rally car
106 Rallye (in my garage now)

Zafira 1.9 TiD150 with a 200 bhp chip on it was great tool... really great. 7 people in it at once ALL scared by the speed inc me and I was driving it!

Re: What's your car history ?

    Where to Start ....

    1982 MkII Astra 1.3L
1978 Mini Clubman Estate (1340cc conversion)
1981 honda Accord 1.6 ( lots of toys but no power! )
    1984 Volvo 360 GLT ( beast ! )
    1991 Renault 19 16v Chamade
    1995 Rover 820
1993 Rover 820 Vitesse ( First taste of forced aspiration )
1991 Nissan 200SX ( Kept this for quite some time - it finished with some fairly serious power )
1998 Ford Mondeo 1.8Lx ( attempt at sensible motoring while the 200 was off the road )
    1992 Lexus LS400 ( attempt failed - I discovered v8... )
1993 Peugeot 306 TD ( worst interior ever , but somehow turned out to be more fun than mud wrestling with Katy Perry. Finished its life with a 500 Mile Roadtrip - had to gaffa tape the windscreen back in on the way home )
1997 Citroen Xantia 2.1TD ( tried to re kindle the french oil burner fire , but failed a little bit.. )
1993 Mitsubishi Sigma 3.0 ( huge...I mean really huge. Bigger than my house )
1994 BMW E34 525 - first of the BMW's not the most economic but a great drive
2009 Ford Fiesta 1.6 D Titanium ( company car , chosen on the strength of the top gear piece on it. The wife drove it more than I did. very well equipped )
1992 Nissan Stagea ( like the sigma only a lot quicker - essentially a Skyline Estate. Amazing in the snow )
1998 Focus 1.6 LX - Bought for the wife. Has 4 wheels and gets from a to b without too much of a suprise.
2003 Jaguar S-Type 3.0 Sport Limited - First try with LPG. Made an awesome wedding car. Was more sorry to see it go than I thought I would be.
2000 BMW 540 Tourer - LPG and 4.4 Litres of Teutonic V8ness. The best of both worlds

EDIT: Almost forgot the BMW 750 I bought with the intention of putting the engine in the 200 sadly my family circumstances changed before I had enough time to see the project through. enough torque to wheel spin at 80
