Heads up for those with 'long term' projects

Don’t think this will impact many of you…… BUT……. for those that have long term projects that aren’t either taxed or SORN then as from June next year the DVLA will no longer recognize them. They are currently in the process of issuing out new V5’s (with a lot more details about both the car and driver – I believe) and if your car does not have of these by June 05 – your in trouble.
This only affects those cars above, not your daily drivers, those that have been laid up for a good few years and therefore missed out on the original SORN process.
Easiest way to trigger a new V5 being produced is any amendment to the V5 details, name/address change, change of colour on the car or increase/decrease CC.
There will be a process to get the cars re-registered – but it will be up to YOU to prove the cars identity/age/etc etc etc
Along with the new computerized MOT (that flags if details don’t match between the car and what’s registered at the DVLA) things look like being interesting…..
Will try and find the official link later

I'm a little worried I'm going to get an automatic fine. My tax runs out at the end of this month but I don't have the car currently and it's with my insurer in the process of being written off (though even that is now looking a bit sketchy).

    Bad timing

Pay new tax then cash it back in when its all sorted? Will lose a months worth maybe but will be safe from the fines at least.

Surely if the cars not on the road u dont need to tax or insure it, documents from the crash with date etc on should cover you incase they say anything.
Prolly best to ring them just in case tbh....

I will phone the insurer and ask them. They may have already taken care of it.

I had the exact same thing, you just need to sorn it and send the v5 to the ins company when(if) they ask for it.

Just a reminder that if you havent got a new style V5C your car ceases to exist come the 1st July......
Unless you can prove the identity, chassis, engine etc etc - and of course if you go this route, you will be using the points system i.e. it has to be original NOT modified

You can just send the original V5 in with a cover note explaining that you would like a new V5C.
Or at least thats what im doing, quote from the DVLA site (though I have as yet to see an AD) "An extensive TV campaign will be broadcast between 12 – 28 June 2005 to encourage all vehicle keepers who have not received the new Registration Certificate to send their old-style V5 Registration Document to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA, with a covering letter."
