go for the passat rather than the a4, value for money and just as good build quality. audis ride harder and the s lines are very hard.

considered a 3 series? the 320d is a nice car and if you steer clear of the m sport you wont break your back on potholes.

Re: Cars to consider for frequent distance driving.

Last time I was in the same position I bought my current car which is a VW Passat Highline Estate TDI. Comes with all the toys, parking sensors, heated leather seats etc. I replaced the head unit with an aftermarket one, had the engine remapped, and have since put ~ 70000 miles on it (over 5 years).

Plenty of poke, even fully laden.

Mine was an 04 model, and the only major mechanical problem it's had is a replacement clutch. My folks have one which is about 5 years younger, and as far as I know have had no major problems with it.

Bit boring, but does the job and within budget.

    Skoda Superb?

Or as you were looking at 4x4 crossover things, what about a Yeti?

Loving the suggestions, I'm guessing by the fact that everyone is suggesting Audi and VW, that maintenance isn't quite as bad as I first imagined?

I looked at the Yeti but it looks like a Panda on Pop!

All these cars, are fugly. I'm getting the idea that comfort == fugly. I can get over that, if the comfort is there...

The running costs of a BMW scare me. Should I be scared? I dunno how much but I imagine theyre a lot if/when things go wrong? (in relation to a ford - which is all i have to go on!)

Well I can only speak from my own experience - scheduled/wear maintenance is better than Vaux (and therefore I expect Ford). Failure related is more, but VAG are supposedly more reliable than most so probably balances out in fewer, but bigger costs.

This coming from someone who drives a ford.. I love the shape of most Audis, Skoda Octavia & Superb are both smart.

I expect they're not too bad - lots of independent BMW specialists around it seems. Check the BMW site to see if they have fixed price options. They're meant to be fairly well-built again, apart from the indicator lights, but there are several drivers on hexus who can give more advice.

I'd argue a beemer isn't quite as comfy as a ford - better round the corners certainly and much more involving, but harder.

I think there is an element of luck with any car purchase. They all have things like ECUs that can fail, most these days have a turbo that is expensive to replace. I have heard horror stories of all the main makes, but thankfully they still seem quite rare.

You will hear an awful lot of nonsense too. VW is apparently reliable, yet the garage I bought my Alfa from recently told me their warranty company mainly deals with claims from broken VWs. Shows that was one hell of an advertising campaign.

Similarly Ford is supposedly cheap to run, yet the dual mass clutch on a co-worker's diesel Focus cost more to replace than the one the V6 Alfa I had at the time, negating any fuel saving he had made from having a diesel.

BMW have some nice aspects, like they don't devalue much. OTOH, people on the road will assume you are a git, and will pop cheap jokes about your indicators not working.

I really think it comes back to what I said before, when any car is going to cost you a damned fortune, you want something that is going to make you smile.

    Go with your heart.

(failing that, buy a cheap shed for the long commute, and spend the difference on a Porche Boxter for the weekends).

Eye of the beholder. Even the R8 leaves me cold. I can appreciate the engineering in it, but it is like they removed all possible character from the design so as not to offend anyone. I think Ford made more effort with the Focus ST tbh.

She's going from an 03 golf to an 08 in about 6 weeks. I may hold fire and see how that is. I've not really been sold on them though...

Once she's had her turn, I'll have probably been down south a few times and will be able to start whinging in order for me to go hunting...

There's a lot to think about from this thread!

I think parts bin is the only way anyone can afford to get cars through modern approvals testing.

The FIAT 1.9 diesel engine in my Alfa is I think almost the same as the one in the Saab 9-3, and the Zafira (which is of course just a tall Astra)
