Ideas for a first cheap car for wife

Ok, so wifes just started learning to drive and I want to get her something small and cheap to practice in (she refuses to drive the Peugeot Boxer we have), insurance wise I would like both of us on it, I have 3 years NCB but this is linked the our current and last motability vehicles so I don't think that will count (?)

    Any idea suggestions welcomed

NCB is on a per policy basis as far as I know, maybe even per-car. If you're getting a separate policy for this car then probably can't use it (unless you want to transfer it to this car, and start over with the old one).

Usual suspects include Corsa, Fiesta, Hyundai i10, Fiat panda, Seat Mii, Toyota Aygo etc.

you can only hold an ncb on one car. you can have two, i have from the days of running a show car and a daily, but you cant apply one bonus to two policies.

Re: Ideas for a first cheap car for wife

Just sorting out insurance and road tax for a Skoda Fabia, very impressed with the insurance prices I am getting. Probably worth trying some comparison sites, as they can be the simplest way to try different cars. Although I have zero no claims, some places will give me a discount as I have been a named driver.

Re: Ideas for a first cheap car for wife

Forgot to say it has to be a 5 door, I don't have a NCB as such as motabiity don't do it but they are happy to send out a letter which shows all insurance info from any vehicle I've had with them and I know that some insurers will accept this as a NCB, shes going to see a corsa today that has 108k miles but a new timing chain is being fitted today on it

Punto is a pretty good car, insurance permitting.

I don't like the idea of a really small car for new drivers. You might not have the experience to see eg some idiot in a Range Rover chatting on their mobile and get hit by them. Nice to have a bit of metal around you to absorb impacts.

Aye, I know this one, if it was up to me I'd have her driving my boxer

Think the Kia Ceed is abit of out of our price range, only really looking to spent 500-600 for her first car

Re: Ideas for a first cheap car for wife

    Yaris

Super cheap to insure and run, the 1.0L is a little underpowered, especially with more than 2 people in the car, but it does the job. We've had ours for about 3 years now. It's the wife's daily car.

Never had a single thing go wrong with it. I keep on top of the oil changes / servicing myself, it's all very easy to access.

Gets 48mpg average with the wife driving it to work and back, I can eek out ~53-55mpg on a 70mph motorway journey.
