Shop around, 225/40/18s are around £100 a corner for something decent, plus fitting. Not cheap, but not crazy money either.

In fact they've got cheaper since I last checked, camskill have Michelin PS3s in that size up for £84 each atm!
Interesting thread. I had to look for 205/55/R16, also 91V tyres recently as well. I do about 500 miles per week so I was really looking for some mileage munchers.
In the end I went for Avon ZV5's. They came well recommended. It has been about 5500 miles now and their is no noticeable difference in their tread which is reassuring.
Handling, braking etc is excellent even in very wet weather, snow and ice.
I was considering Goodyear efficient grip performance. Glad I didn't now!

I might try the goodyear for a set, but I fear they're optimised to review well first and foremost - could be wrong, but I worry quite how soft they are (though this may be a very good thing on the 18s...). Suspect the PS3s are a better all rounder, but only one way to find out
My car's not worthy. If I was in a boxter or something I'd go for them right away.Pilot Super Sports are also tempting, but they're considerably more expensive.
The new A3 has zero realistic feel through the wheel, which caught me by surprise during an unexpectedly fast avoidance manoeuvre recently - I was expecting some manner of understeer and/or electronic intervention, but instead got a tug of lateral G as it stayed stuck to the road (so the conti sport 5 aren't too bad, but I can't abide the noise/discomfort). Other times I can piddle out in the wet and still get wheelspin by surprise.
My old car (A3 2.0T quattro, 200 bhp) would get 25k out of a set of PS3s; they definitely wear well. Not sure how the wear on the Goodyears is; they're only about a fiver a corner cheaper, so they might be a bit pricey if they wear like crazy.
I'm not overly enamoured of the contisport 5s either; they seem competent enough, but certainly nothing special. No wheelspin that I can recall (thank you quattro). Looking like I'll get 20k out of the current set maybe, so the wear is reasonable on them at least.
I have Goodyear Asym 2 on the front of my BWM, can't say I've noticed any extreme wear, and they perform very well, would definitely recommend them. However for me & my car they were much cheaper than PS3's like £20 a corner cheaper or more, mine are 19" rims though.
I've got the efficient grips on the front of my vectra and am very impressed., the previous PS3s where starting to let go in the corners in the damp, they had about 5mm on the still, so moved them to the rears. They went completely bold in about 1k and buldged. If it wasn't for an annoying vibration I may well have had a blow out. Now have some random Toyos on the back, was the only thing they had in stock.
