    Knowing when to walk away...

So I recently paid for a full service, bought a new (full) exhaust and a new wheel bearing for my MK1 Focus (52 plate / 131k miles) and now the driver's window motor is dead, which means I'll have easily spent more than the car is worth keeping it running in the past month or so... Hopefully it will behave for the next few years until I'm forced to drop it off at the scrap yard. But it's like a comfortable pair of slippers - I know it's dog eared but it's just so comfortable...

The question is not whether the car will cost more to repair than it's worth, but whether it will cost more to repair than it's worth to you.

Re: Knowing when to walk away...

Or more pertinently, what's the replacement cost? The car might only be sellable for a few hundred, but an equivalent replacement car could be several grand - that covers quite a lot of repairs! (or so I'm telling myself...)

On a practical note - is there a car breakers near you where you might get a window motor from a scrapped car?

There is, but apparently Ford swapped out the motors on the later models so I'd have to find another ~10 year old Focus to get a replacement and I'm not 100% confident that a 2nd hand one would stay alive for much longer than mine has. Though if I ever fix the aircon (also busted) it will definitely be with 2nd hand parts as a new compressor is silly money. I'm hoping the existing one might jump back into life with a shim to be honest (I *think* it's the clutch on the compressor, rather than the compressor itself).

That's what I keep telling myself, while lustily looking at a MK3 ST estate at the local dealer... The loan payments would be a hell of a lot more than a new window motor though (never mind the insurance, etc)

Re: Knowing when to walk away...

If the windscreen motor failed with the window up, then what's the problem?

I ran my last Alfa like that, put off lots of work until it just wasn't economic to fix. Really miss the car now it's gone

Heater fan was the last straw. Kind of need demisting to stay safe, and so much engine bay needed to come out to replace it it was a very expensive job.

The window is stuck up - it would just annoy the hell out of me every time I drive to a car park. If it wasn't the driver's door window it would probably never have gotten fixed.

I do have difficulty letting go though - I know that *most* of the car is working at any one time and it somehow doesn't seem worth it to get rid of it and get something else when the cost of repair is a lot lower than the cost of replacement - or at least it is cheaper to repair as and when each repair comes in. Not sure how much I've spent over the life of the car! I doubt checking will cheer me up though it's been a reliable car overall (had it since 12K on the clock) - mostly wear and tear items and only getting bigger bills in the past couple of years (clutch replaced at 115K for example).

Re: Knowing when to walk away...

Better the devil you know though, if you got a new car things like that might also be on the way out and then it's additional cost on top of the price of a new car

Quite a few scrapyards/breakers are using ebay now, worth a look if you can get the part number for the door motor and see if you can source one that way

Re: Knowing when to walk away...

At least it went with the window up, mine went with the window half way down. Is it definitely the motor seems lucky it just happened to go when right at the top. got my replacement off eBay and it's been fine for the last few months. Only a tenner and a few hours messing around.

just take the inside door off get some numbers and take photos of it to match it up.

gettign rid over a window motor seems an odd nail in the coffin.

Is the one in the rear the same? Could swap...
Or as suggested - ebay. Is this the right one?

I wasn't suggesting that I would, if I was going to throw the towel in, I would have done it before the exhaust, wheel bearing and recent service. Just that with that and the window I've spent more than the car is worth. Oh and the back windows are manual...

On my car at least you cant swap the other sides they are mirrored and you cant take the motor off as its a sealed unit.

A tip for anyone it happens to and its half way down etc prize the motor off and use the motor shaft in a power drill to do it up otherwise you will be there hours winding it up.
