Not whats needed in the new year...

Thinking possible big end bearings or piston rings letting oil into cylinders :/
Someone left a note on a piece of cake in the fridge that said, "Do not eat!". I ate the cake and left a note saying, "Yuck, who the hell eats paper ?

Sounds like a singer, big ends don't let oil in cylinders, I'd guess at a piston or rings broke but it needs to have a mechanic look at it.

The big end bearings shouldn't have gone unless you've ran the engine dry without oil. I've had first hand experience of that and it's very loud, and makes a lot more of a screeching noise.

Careful running it either way - if it is the piston rings, you don't want to risk scratching the piston sleeves.

Planning on dropping the sump at some point to check the bearings and pistons (if it's not the bearings)

Re: Not whats needed in the new year...

    Not that good!

bottom end issues are a engine replacement job

I picked the car up cheap at only £700, new lump is going to cost me £200, cambelt kit + waterpump £75, £200 to do the work plus small bits (sparks, filters ect)

New one has 60k on the clock

Yeah but a new headgasket including all the work wouldn't be much difference in price.

Seeing as you can get about £200 from a scrap yard these days, if it has had something major go on it maybe just scrap it and get something else mate.

I don't think it is, they normally give off blue smoke and the smoke stops after warm up, this is constant smoke and the bottom is loud

It's not the head, oil is clean, no water/coolant/oil mixing header tank is clean with no signs of bubbles

I can strip the old engine and get back some of the money in parts

Re: Not whats needed in the new year...

Think a bit mixed up in our posts, I know its not the head, I was just talking about prices. A friend of mine had the conrod snap and it sounded like a clattery tank but that wouldn't run at all.
