Sounds like a singer, big ends don't let oil in cylinders, I'd guess at a piston or rings broke but it needs to have a mechanic look at it.
The big end bearings shouldn't have gone unless you've ran the engine dry without oil. I've had first hand experience of that and it's very loud, and makes a lot more of a screeching noise.
Careful running it either way - if it is the piston rings, you don't want to risk scratching the piston sleeves.
Planning on dropping the sump at some point to check the bearings and pistons (if it's not the bearings)

Not the headgasket is it?
Jon
No, not the head, oil is clean and and coolant in header tank is fine

Ah thats good, I had an Escort with the Zetec engine, a puff of smoke one day and one of the cylinders was filled up with coolant :/
Jon
Not that good!
bottom end issues are a engine replacement job
I picked the car up cheap at only £700, new lump is going to cost me £200, cambelt kit + waterpump £75, £200 to do the work plus small bits (sparks, filters ect)
New one has 60k on the clock

Valve stem seal is another possibility.

I don't think it is, they normally give off blue smoke and the smoke stops after warm up, this is constant smoke and the bottom is loud
It's not the head, oil is clean, no water/coolant/oil mixing header tank is clean with no signs of bubbles
I can strip the old engine and get back some of the money in parts

Think a bit mixed up in our posts, I know its not the head, I was just talking about prices. A friend of mine had the conrod snap and it sounded like a clattery tank but that wouldn't run at all.
Jon
Oh lol, for the cost it's worth doing, the car is worth around £1900 and will get about £100 back from the old lump
