TBF, 5 people even in proper saloons is a bit of a push. I've had 4 + luggage for a couple of days in a rental 1 series happily enough. Hell without luggage you could get 4 adults comfortably in most manufacturers bottom range cars. (we've just bought a citigo for the wife, which would be perfectly fine for a couple of hours in the back of).

Yeah, it's a problem for someone my height in the golf! A3 is longer wheelbase, but also it appears to have been hit repeatedly with the ugly stick.

Well sure, you'd have a problem in the back of most non-MPVs to be honest even Insignia's etc have lower rear seat rooflines than A3/golfs. (btw by A3 I mean the 5-door sportback version)

    Re: Citroen DS3 Adivce wanted

    hehe yeah.

But anyway, no one is suggesting a 3 door, for when you need a 5 door.

You can do the odd 6 hour trip with tall people in the back, I've done it. But I've also had a few Dave87 sized people in the back who found it very comfy. However it is a completely different story in the front, the front is really good. The back is just average.

All in all, I might well be selling my car this year, as it will be 3 years old, as is, I'll probably replace it with another DS3 if I do.

Main question- Is there anything else is the so called super min range (basically a hatchback) that I should consider? My reason for the DS3 is that all the reviews seem to rate it well in all categories, and also it does look very nice.

Not sure how you work that out given they are almost exactly the same size.

1 series hatch is 4.32x1.98x1.42 m and an A3 is 4.31x1.97x1.43 m. 5 door variants in both cases.

They're also both in the same size segment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-segment

1.6 THP engine has some known faults - issues with timing chain tensioners and blown piston rings are more common than they should be. Seems to mainly affect older engines.

Fair enough, but interior space-wise a 1 series is much more like a Fiesta than a Golf.

I think a 1 series interior is actually similar in size, but feels smaller due to the design. Boot space is similar at least.

Well they are quite compact for their segments - a 3 series seems noticeably more compact than an Insignia/Mondeo for example (all D segment). Then there's all the space taken up with transmission tunnel as well I guess.

They do certainly feel a lot more packed in, particularly in the back I think its down to the seat configurations, which are more 2 and ridge rather than a bench like in a lot of cars. Similar to my old C30, felt pretty small inside, but you comfortably fit four adults in it (I did manchester to luton with me and 3 guys that were 6'+ with no complaints.

Anyway, as far as the DS3 goes, they certainly do look nice, but regardless of size its still a step down in quality from a BMW (I realise that heavy doors etc are mostly a perception thing, but that doesn't mean they're not nice). Fabia is a great looking car, and they're pretty competitively priced if you're buying new - the only thing is you'd have to stop yourself getting the vrs.

A friend of mine bought a DS3 precisely because of the quality (certainly interior wise) being as good as his previous A4 and better than the 1 series he had after the A4. I had a 1 series M sport and the interior was average quality at best, if comparing would say poor compared to the Golf I had before it and the A3 I drove for a while.

    Re: Citroen DS3 Adivce wanted

My decision is being made on the look of the car, its low emissions (so no tax), and also mpg. And the DS3 seems to come out on top of my price range of £9500. I have seen a Citroen DS3 1.6 e-HDi Airdream DStyle at my local Citroen dealer for £9450, and it has 26k on the clock, 68mpg urban and 88 extra urban (combined 78mpg), also made in 2011. Going to test drive it tomorrow and see what its like. I had hoped to maybe get it in red or at leats white with black roof, but they only have an all white one second hand. I ahve been looking on auto trader and ebay, but the dealership one is the best for the mpg + cost + miles on the clock.

So just bought this http://www.lookers.co.uk/citroen/use...0/citroen-ds3/ :-) Took it for a drive today and loved it!!!! I did look at others like the dsport but sadly not in my price range, but I am more than happy with what I have chosen. And looking forward to seeing my fuel bill drop!!

Shiny! Hope you have fun and enjoy it. Knowing from the owners manual that it's normally due a service at that mileage make sure that it's had one. The MPG tapers off when the oil gets more filthy, so I'd check out if it is due!
