    RAC Warranty

    Hi All,
Following on from my last petrol vs diesel question, I've found a decent Galaxy. It's an 11 plate with ~34k on the clock. The garage was trying very hard to sell me an RAC warranty on the car for £399. I'm a bit sceptical as the only thing that's gone wrong with my old diesel in the whole time I've owned it is the dual mass flywheel/clutch, and that wouldn't have been covered anyway.

Opinions on the RAC warranty? Worth a look or not worth the paper it's written on?

    Cheers...

    Re: RAC Warranty

If you want a warranty from an external company go direct (or via Quico TCB etc.). Very rarely does it work out any better getting it through your place of purchase.

On an 11 plate, I wouldn't bother. I'd imagine most things that are likely to go wrong are going to be down to wear and tear, which is rarely covered.

How many years/miles is that warranty for? Does it cover consequential damage? What's the procedure for when things go wrong - do they get to choose which garage does the repair? (In which case it'll be the cheapest halfords autocentre they can find) or can you take it where you like for the repair?

Finally are there any big cost items that you think are a possible to go wrong that *would* be covered?

    Re: RAC Warranty

Didn't mention a mileage, but it's 12 months. Seems like no one covers consequential damage.

No idea about what happens if something goes wrong, but reading up it seems that you have to pay to have the fault diagnosed on the first place.

    Doesn't seem worth if.

    No, I'd say not.

I did get a third-party warranty (with Mapfre/abraxas) when I bought my Audi, but it specifically did cover consequential damage. Diagnosis theoretically could have cost me money should it turn out not be a covered item, but it never was because if it was a serviceable item then diagnosis charge was wavered by the garage anyway. And I could take it to my local audi garage for warranty work and they'd handle all the paper work for me - I didn't need to do/pay a thing.

The reason I got it was because I was buying a nearly 5-year old car, and the warranty would last another 3 years, and there were horror stories of turbo failure/cambelt snapping/electronics, all of which were very definitely covered (inc. consequential - a must if you're protecting against cambelt damage).
