New Steering on the rally car.

Am way out of my depth, but someone else did this so its sorted...I will attempt to texplain whats changed.

First: the chap in volved is Smon Mauger (pronounced Major) son of Dick Mauger....

They run Major Motorsport (having given up trying to get it spelled right by the public)

Simon has this year done some pretty good stuff with his own Astra, although he and his dad have competed (still do) lots of different cars.

Dave knows him well....and he "borrowed" our car to give it a tweak

First up were steering lock stops of his own creation, and while we've lost a bit of lock, we should be in the world of safe drive shafts now

Secondly is a modification to the speed the steering responds and while not to camber (cant see a change) more to track rod ends, caster and .. and..I am faliling in the dark.

All I can explain is how it drives.

Like a Mk2 Escort!!! Yup...a front wheel drive car than when you turn in on a trailing throttle does nothing at all...and as SOON as you open it up it rips into the corner and the back follows wide.

No kidding....this weekend is gonna be a learning curve and a half

    |Round abouts involve a turn in, and a big fat foot full of gas...and it just pulls round...in a way thats hard to define.

Cant explain it better.....but its gonna be an experience

Ah...... see, spend all the money you like on an engine mate, but suspension is where it all counts. They probably spent a little time getting rid of bump steer.

And like a Mk2 escort? Aw come on??? Mk2 = plant throttle on exit and powerslide your way out of the corner on full opposite!

Sounds like my set-up, as long as it's not wet apply as much throttle as you like and it will just pull in and stick, the back end just gets dragged wherever the front decides.

How much camber are you running btw? From the factory mine was -0.5 degrees and has been set at -0.75, i'm taking it around my mates this morning to try -0.9 or -1..... i'm just not sure how much is too much without discovering 2 months down the line i've got no tyres left.

ok...no camber changes..simply had the steering arms shortened to speed up the steering response.

At a guess I;d say that effect the ratio that the inner and outter wheel turn in as well....but I'm stabbing in the dark.

Will get Robster to drive it tomorrow so he can have a go at explaining it

    hmmmmmmm.....

Is the car lowered from standard height? Shortening the steering arms would give a little more toe out, which would make the car more darty on initial turn in.

I dont think so.....its the problem with letting someone else (who is emminently more qualified than me) to work on the car.

    Catch 22......I just dont know
