    Rubberware

    OK, grabbed your attention

I'm in the (un) fortunate position of needing to replace four tyres, so it is an opportunity for a change of brand. I currently have Continental S3 Sports on aBMW 330. They are OK, but I have the option of going for Goodyear F! Asymmetric. The price is about the same (within £5) but the Goodyear have a(claimed) better fuel economy, and, I'm told, slightly harder composition, so they should last a bit longer.

    Any thoughts?

    Re: Rubberware

I have a 330 - I went for some mid range i guess, falkens - ze914's if i can recall. My rims are staggered, so I paid slightly more for the rears. All in for around 414 quid.

I bought that whole set june 2013 - been pretty good imo, although I had to get a replacement rear the other week, damn potholes :-(

    Re: Rubberware

    I'm guessing you're looking at a staggered set of 225/40/18 + 255/35/18?

If you shop around they shouldn't be that much more at all, but they're worth it. A set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3's.
Fantastic performance and they're fairly long lasting.

Can't recall exact mileage but my last set on the 330d saw me through 25k.

Same size all round. I always used to use Goodyear tyres way back. Last time I had Michelin were asymmetrics on a Triumph TR6!

    Re: Rubberware

That reminds me to check my tyres, haven't done so in a few months, should probably check everything over before winter sets in!

How long do people find their tyres last?

I mention because mine have done over 20k yet still showing little sign of wear. I think I might get 30k. Does this mean I'm driving like a milk man, or just because I've kept the pressure up?

    Re: Rubberware

Too many variables to be honest.
Can be vary massively depending on the car in question, how it's used, if it's always loaded up, the type of driving done, driving style, how often they're checked etc etc etc.
Not to mention the actual tyre characteristics themselves

I'm guessing small ish car, and I suspect not the softest of compounds?

    Missed this!

Guessing as they weren't in the O.P it's a choice between the two listed! Can't say I had a bad word to say about them or a set of Falkens.
    The FK-453's in particular.

DS3, and no idea, they are the tyres that came on it, they didn't give a choice afaik.

But yes, it's not exactly heavy, and I'm not one to do rubber leaving acceleration, even if the eco diesel engine would play ball.

Suspect they're fitted with slightly more 'energy saving' tyres if it's got any hint of the eco badge or marketing about it. Not necessarily a bad thing!
Sounds about right for the wear then, just make sure they're not hiding a bald inner edge!

    Re: Rubberware

My parent's car in the south-ish of France (a Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6 TDi) only gets at best 22k km, it's ridiculous and this is on Michelin Primacy 3's which should be pretty decent tyres. My Dad is a very light driver, partly to try and keep the cost of tyres down, the rate that car goes through them is just silly. It'd be great if someone could explain to me why a 1.6TDi needs 225/55/15's, it's only 110bhp!

I used to get ~25k out of a set on my old car, running pilot sport 3s.

Current car has done around 10k and the tyres are on 4-5mm. So I'll maybe get 16k I guess, 20k at the outside. Continental sport contact 5s. Will be replacing them with something else, maybe PS3s or F1 asymmetrics when they wear out.
