I've seen 3 Golf R's this week. Evertime I see one I think "oih.. chav boy... what's with the quad pipe on as new, quire pretty hatchback.?" Then it occurs.. it's standard!
When has a 2 litre turbo with 300 hp ever needed quad pipes?
I kind of understand it on an AMG ML63 5.5litre bi turbo .. it's close to needing it then....
but a 300bhp golf?
Anyone think it looks right? and proper?
does it have trick exhaust notes or anything?

The S3 has done the same as well. Personally think it looks ridiculous.
Dual pipes are fine and can work well (Golf GTI/GTD, BMW M135i) but four on anything the wrong side of a V8 should be criminal.

my diesel c class supposedly has 'twin' exhaust pipes. they're actually bits of chrome with nothing behind them, the actual exhaust is just stainless underneath bits.
On the GTD it does have a trick exhaust that makes it sound pretty cool in a wish I had it when I was 17 kind of way. Don't know if the GTI also has it, but its largely cosmetic.
The new daily that's on order has dual pipes, but again criminally the second is just cosmetic! The petrol they're not just for show, it's diesel drinking brother however...
I would almost be inclined to allow it on a mk.4 R32. If I'm remembering the spec right and it was the V6 turbo'd fella anyway. If I'm not remembering rightly I agree, thoroughly unacceptable behaviour putting quad pipes on that Golf, or in fact any other Golf.
I understand that anything with a turbo likes as little pressure from the exhaust system after the compressor as possible but what looks to be four two inch pipes is not only over kill in that regard but probably not the simplest, straightest path that an exhaust system could follow to the rear bumper, especially underneath a hatchback where space is at enough of a premium already.
All things considered what it really seems to be doing is differentiating itself from a poor mans Golf by doing the automotive equivalent of stuffing a pair of socks down your boxers.
They're purely cosmetic - its only 2" down to the backbox anyway.
Im with Knox, the twin central R32 (yes it was V6... well, a VR6) was the way to do things properly on a hot hatch. This is definitely more to do with peen values than anything else.
I gather there are regulations now on exhaust tip temperature limits, and I would love to think that this gives a technical reason to spread the gas across more pipes to ease pipe cooling.
But then I look at it and think it is just pointless shiny stuff that will just cost twice as much to replace come back box rot time.
This seemed to me to start when Diesels had DPF filters forced on them, and the early ones were bad enough at restricting the gas flow that a pair of them seemed like a good idea. Perhaps that gave rise to exhaust pipe envy from petrol car owners or something. I dunno, some people are just weird.
Also, being a bit old, it looks rather 1970's to me
It's normally aspirated, no turbo.

The symmetrical pipes do look good, but I think there is something nice about a fat single pipe in the middle like on the Ibiza Cupra

Just out of interest, because I've never actually thought to ask, does anyone know why a VR6 is called a VR6 and not just a V6. Is it a fancy piece of nomanclature, or does it have something to do with the actual layout of the engine ala the W12 for example?

They are a narrow V engine, I think VW are the only people who still make them which seems odd to me. Lancia and Ford did V4 engines back in the 60's and 70's, and in these days of small engine bays I would have thought being able to fit a 4 pot engine in the space of a 3 pot engine would be a win, but there you go.

My A3 doesn't know what to do with it's engine bay space - there's a big structure and this piddly little 1.4l engine floating in the middle - quite literally on struts to extend the mounting
