FAO: Jiff & other car electricians

Right, as you probably remember, I got myself an old car. From before the days of car radios.

I want to fit a proper head unit and speakers to it. Now, i know that most headunits these days use a standard ISO plug that my car obv. hasn't got.

What does this plug deal with? Is it power, speakers, everything? Or does it just do the power, with the aerial and speakers on seperate plugs at the back?

Either way, is it as simple as getting a bare plug from halfords and then wiring in the correct wires to it?

There seems to be very little information available out there that I can find, anyway.

    Thanks

    Whats the car?

If its NEVER had a radio loom in it, then your going to be looking at adding one in. Two pairs of speaker cables, Permanent Live feed, switched ignition feed, Illumination feed and an earth.

You can pick up a part loom from halfords or pop down to the local scrappy and removed one from another motor (you get to choose how much wire you want!).

Make sure you take the feeds from the fused side of the fuse box.

oh and ISO has two eight way plugs; one for all the feeds, one for speakers (two front, two rear)

Most custom installs like this you don't want to be taking your power feed from the fusebox (unless it has spare fuses - but as its an old car I'm guessing very much its a small box). You'd be better running a line straight from the battery and fusing it as close to the battery as possible (like under 2 inch).
