Do you have to be 21 to drive your own car abroad (say in France by taking a ferry) or does it depend on your insurance company?
Does anyone know what Directline's policy on this is?
I can't find anything on the website

I believe its is 18 for France and Spain, but I may be wrong. You also have to carry lots of other stuff, like spare bulbs, warning triangle, fire extinquishers and refelctive jackets. Best bet is prob ringing the insurance comapy, some will do European cover, and also to pick up a little booklet about it fromt he travel agents

18 in Portugal, I believe.
You basically have to follow the rules for the country you're driving in. For France, I also think it's 18 to be able to drive, and as also stated previously, they do have funny rules about carrying warning triangles and stuff. TBH we tend to ignore those when we go over for a booze cruise, the chances of getting into trouble are so small that we prefer to take the risk. If you're going for a couple of days though, probably best to stick to the rules.
Try and buy headlight beam adaptors before you get on the ferry as well, they really rip you off IMO.
Rich :¬)
Your insurance company automatically provides you with TP-only insurance when using your vehicle abroad. No need to inform them for this. Many insurers will also offer additional cover which you will need to ask them about, and this may have terms and conditions such as age limits.
