On Behalf Of A Mate (Subwoofer Lockups)

    Hi guys,

A mate of mine has an old-shape Clio 1.2 (like yours Lowe), with a 12" Vibe sub w/inbuilt amp, and a Kenwood (KRC 192 or 196) head unit. Sometimes the sub will "lock up", just producing a low frequency (but fairly high volume) rumble, until the head unit is switched off. It normally happens when the bass is loud, ie when a bass kick ocurs in a song. He can listen to d&b fine, but the sub will lock up if there is a "loud" section of bass.

What's going on, and how can he fix this?

    Thanks

if the sub locked up it wouldnt move atall its the headunit or amp
check all your wireing etc makes sure its beefy enough

ty to replicate the fault and when it does disconnect the power for the sub but leave headunit on then put connect the sb see if it still makes the noise , atleast u can narrow it down a touch maybe ?

From whats happening it does seem to be more of a problem with the sub losing it's signal from the head unit, rather than a problem with the sub itself. The fact its doing something tells me the amp is probably fine.

    Any more ideas?

So you reckon turning the amp down on the sub should sort it out?

Its probably the amp as Trig says, some have kind of cutout circuits almost (Ive seen it happen once before also) ... is the amp setup properly for the sub and HU or was it just shoved in?

Either that or a ground loop occuring (anyone into Vinal will know the problem), if you don't ground amps etc. properly then they can malfunction.

It was installed by Halfrauds I think, so I think he's gonna take it back in there and have them look at it.

Turn down the bass on the headunit and the output from the amp to the sub..
Just cos Halfords fitted it doesnt mean it was there fault, your m8 mite have cranked it up a bit, turn it rite down n then work ur way up until it trips out again...
