Question My new R6 and commuter parking

    Wotcha,
Well the deal with the GSXR didnt go through so Ive just bought a Yamaha R6 2004 model registered 2005 brand new.

http://sportrider.com/bikes/2004/200...r6-02-zoom.jpg (exactly like this same colour etc)

But Im getting the wobblies over taking it to the station and parking it. I used to do this with the CBR600 which was in good condition but a 1996 model, do you reckon I should risk parking it in the bike park or not?

Also I have a disklock and a cover over the bike when parked but I dont use a chain because they weigh a ton, any other security devices you'd recommend and are they worth it?

    cheers
    Rom

It's a very pinchable bike mate. If you can't lock it to something solid with a decent chain, then I'd seriously consider fitting a tracker or something like that. Should do your insurance premiums a lot of good too.

The block of flats where I live has its own private car parking area. A few months ago some guys in a van pulled up and just loaded up a Ducati Monster and a GSXR600 belonging to my neighbours. They were locked up, but not locked down to something, so in the van they went, never to be seen again.

http://www.sound-dist.co.uk/cgi-bin/...r::1,0,0,1:::: it might weigh a ton, but it's the most effective way of stopping your bike being nicked.

Check your insurance, it might not be covered unless its chained to something solid.

Thats a lovely bike! So when can I come round for a spin?

I would also go for the 'chain that weighs a ton' option and chain it to something.

The problem with parking it there everyday, scum are going to notice it there everyday, and I'm sure if they wanted it they will make a plan! So tracker and an alarm may be a wise purchase as well.

Looks like the big chain option then You're probably right about keeping a routine making it more nickable as well, shucks maybe Ill ust get a pedal bike for work, what annoys me is all this bloody fuss because of thieves, I mean naieve I know but if I work hard to buy something why am I held to ransom if I want to use it - makes me want to scream/kill etc

    - flibb i'll check tmoz on insurance

any ideas on a tracker system?

    - one good point is that there are railings at the station so that something to chain it too.

True. I can't afford it right now David, but I reckon you could. There's nothing to stop you getting a bike licence....

Im 32 married house locked garage and live nr tonbridge

TPFT with no no claims bonus is £480 no worse than a car tbh altho its tpft and not fully comp.
Insurer is Carole Nash - v good so far

Leathers are not pricey as long as you get 2 piece, if u can wait for winter they are dirt cheap, Id say £300 foer hein gericke 2 piece set but you can get a jacket/trousers and lid for as little as £140 which are perfectly good. (with armour)

Thanks for that, I'm interested in learning but haven't sussed out the costs yet. I did look around at different insurers and found many large insurers don't do bikes.

What kind of bike would you recommend for a new starter?

Since I've turned 21 I'm considering looking at Training for Direct Access

From the DVLA "So that learners aged 21 or over may practise for the large motorcycle test, they may ride any motorcycle on the road which exceeds the UK learner specification but only when accompanied (on another motorcycle) by an approved motorcycle instructor. The practical test may only be taken by riders aged 21 or over and completed on a motorcycle of at least 35kW (46.6bhp). When this test is passed the rider can immediately ride any size motorcycle without learner restrictions."

My parents are keen to discourage me as much as possible. But I'm due to move to London in the summer and after looking at the logistics I don't think a car is viable so a motorbike is my next option, it's really just going to be for weekends.

First you need to do a CBT - one day basic training without which it is illegal to ride any bike in this country. If you then want to continue, book a Direct Access course (should be around £500). You learn on a Kawasaki ER-5 or a Suzuki GS500 (they're cheap and reliable and much loved by riding schools). Once you've passed, you're probably best to buy something similar for your first bike - Suzuki Bandit 600s are popular, cheap, reliable and just a little bit faster than a GS500. Don't worry about a sports bike like the R6 for a while, even a ER-5 will go faster than any car you could afford to drive for the next 10 years!!
