    First Car Lotus

I've been looking at getting my first car and I am pretty set on a Lotus Elise can pick the up for great prices from Lotus approved around £16-18k.

However getting insurance a group 20 car for a 21 year old with 3 years history but no "no claims" in their own name is a nightmare! I've tried so many companies without luck I eventually got a quote for Fully Comp £2300 for Elephant.co.uk for 10 months with an accelerated no claim.
but I really can't justify that!!! although i'm trying to think of a way.

Who is everyone else with? and what group insurance are you in?

a bit of a compromise, but why not get a lotus of some sort as a track-day car, then get a towing car for everyday use - it'd be less tiring to drive, more practicle, and you could get the most from your lotus when you want.

try confused.com for quotes, but i'm fairly sure no-one will touch you on that car.. you'd be a liability!

Sounds like you've got money to burn man, why not get a hot hatch (Saxo VTS, Clio 172 etc.) thats as fast, more practical and easier to get insured on.

Also wasn't there something about the accelerated no-claims being worth nothing?

Yep i think it's going to have to go on a back burner until I get 3 years no claims and I can get some more sensible quotes. Which is a shame since a New Mini Cooper will set you back around 15k I'd rather pay that little bit more for something a lot better.

My parents are suggesting a Vauxhall Corsa cos of the free insurance but there is no way I'm touching one of those. (I learnt in one)

Practicality really doesn't matter too me at all in fact the less pratical it is the better

I'm not really after a hot hatch don't really appreciate the boy racer image. But having said that I'm leaning towards a Citroen C2 to get some no claims... then move up as soon as I get a sensible quote. My current insurer won't put me on a group 20D car until I'm 35... which is their loss since my target is a Ferrari before I'm 30!
I hate insurance *grumble* spent all day trying to find reasonable travel and contents insurance.

More practical yes, easier to get insured on yes, as fast? Youve got to be kidding, like comparing a fiesta 1.4td with a mclaren f1, well, almost

If you can afford £18k on a car, then im sure you can afford £2k insurance? What you should have done, is bought an old mini for £300 when you were 17, and by now youd have enough no claims to insure yourself on almost anything

yep I realise that now Butuz.. I'm think of maybe insuring a run down car for a couple of years and not driving it.

As for being able to afford the insurance I possibly could but I really think that is extortionate and not justifiable.

After 3 years are you really experienced enough as a driver to handle something that potent? It is after all little more than a road legal race car?

You thought about an Elan as a stop gap? They are very insurable. 1.6 Turbo. Supposedly the most reliable Lotus as it uses Suzuki parts.

Theres less than a second between a clio 172 and an earlier elise in the 0-60 race.

    Lotus Elise = 5.9
    Clio 172 = 6.7

hes not got any ncb atall so do u have any experience ? i doubt it
you dont have enough experience to drive a car like an elise useing its potential and haveing had a shot of a mates they are very twitchy and not really my cup of tea too rough and ready and small

the vx220 is the car to have if u want that sort of thing but again i dont think your capable of exploiting it !

i was 21 an i could get insured on a group 20 car and im sure the guy said it was a class d but im not sure and i was only 2000 for 10 months
