Related to the bad batches of car parts rant, this is my flexi joint rant. They're junk.

This is just over 2 years old, it's not particularly exposed as there is an undertray beneath it. It does get hot (being the exhaust manifold), but still. Just garbage.

Replace the manifold with one that doesn't use flexi joints.

Something like this which uses slip joints instead, or even one with solid pipes.

Hi Butcher, I know nothing about cars other than they have four wheels and get me from A to B (usually), but I've been taking lessons in reasoning and astract thought recently, and it's my interpretation that the engine is clearly running too hot and you have used the wrong fuel. That or it's clearly not fit for purpose. That's why they improved the MOT recently to stop these dangerous cars being on the road. We should crush all cars older than 3 years and make everyone buy new ones. That will solve all the problems created by <insert random politician>. Do I get an amen?

The flex joint corroding and blowing seems to be another 'signature feature' on BMWs... I've replaced several this month.

I take it from that picture that the pipe is designed such that on short journeys acidic condensate will puddle in the flexible bit as it is the bottom of a "U" shaped bit?

What are you worrying about the pipe for? The image I posted clearly shows there are bigger things to worry about - like those flailing limbs.

The photo is taken from above, so that blown bit is actually towards the front of the engine bay. You can just about make out the radiator fan at the bottom of the picture.

There is some rust along the underside of it, though, suggesting that the road cack is getting in somewhere... If it were just the heat, I'd expect it to be more around the whole as it is with the collar. The connector beneath is slightly gacky, too.

That's not the underside, it's the front. The lower flexi seems less knackered if anything.

fair point, and sorry Butcher - I merely posted it here as I know you're familiar with the threads.

looking objectively at the photo. Is the rusting to the bottom worse inside or outside? If inside is it being driven by condensation inside the pipe? If so, is that part of the exhaust meant to be getting any water vapour? (Like I say, I really don't know too much about the finer details of car workings)
