Company Car Allowance

My dear sis has just landed herself a plumb job complete with £450/pm car allowance! We've been scrounging about and delving deep into the backpages of What Car? mag and come up with all sorts of comedy cars she can get her grubby mits on. Here's just a few, give us your thoughts! :

Spanking New BMW 320d ES - 17% tax (163bhp)
Audi A4 2.0d Sport - 16+% tax (138bhp)
Audi A3 2.0T FSI Sport S-Line 3dr - 20+% tax (197bhp)
Saab 9-3 1.8T Vector Convertable - 20+% tax (150bhp)
Toyota Celica 1.8vvt 190 - 24% tax (197bhp)
Mazda RX8 228 - 35% tax (229bhp)
Saab 9-5 3.0TiD - 20% tax (173bhp)

Bearing in mind most of the motors cost around £21k stax is a killer! So while the RX8 is very high on the wanted list it'll cost her something like £250 per month while the BMW is closer to £200 or even less!

If she's just getting cash then you don't pay BIK tax, just normal 40% PAYE.

Are you sure its 40% tax? I was under the impression that it was only that after £30,000 total earnings & below that 22%, but the car allowance is included within your salary so it gets taxed with your salary...

Out of that list id go for the Auli 2.0D

From that list, provided its the new one, 320d without question. Brilliant car from what I've seen so far - can't wait to see some more at the launch next week

YES the three series is the new one.
NO the car allowance is not cash each month it's a lease fee the company are prepared to pay. She's a 40% tax payer and is looking at emissions and fuel tax sadly. She does have the option to opt out for £6k a year.
YES the Accord CDti AND 1-series (top spec) are both on the full list of motors I've pointed her at. I love them both but she thinks the 1-series is too small.

Other cars I've not mentioned include the Renaultsport Megane and Seat Cupra R/Cupra TDi. As TiG says though she's a little heavy on the gas so her licence is a something in need of protection. She's also been in the middle of a couple of big concertinas which is why she's keen to stick to a larger motor rather than say a Fabia vRS.

Oh and TiG Skoda doen't currently list an Octavia vRS as the old model has been phased out and the new model is yet to be released!

By the way, if she's being offered a private fuel allowance, it's only worth taking if she will do more than about 10,000 private miles per year. Otherwise, it's cheaper to pay for the fuel herself.

If she's not already got a car she likes, I'd go for the company car, as the cash would only be worth £3,540 net of PAYE and NIC, and she's then got to pay for her insurance, tax, servicing, depreciation etc from that... (presuming that the company car comes fully inclusive of these things, like my company scheme).

if i were her i'd get something sexy and unreliable - how about an alfa? think about it - she doesnt have to care if it breaks down or is all unreliable...

failing that. how about a nice jag or volvo - i think they're head and sholders (image-wise) above repmobile bimmer 3s..
