I have a MK2 Audi TT, it has 4 seats but I wouldn't even bother trying to get anything or anyone in there. Unless they have no legs, then you may be able to fit someone in. Also anyone taller than 5' 7' isn't getting in the back either as there head will touch the roof and be driving along with a bent neck. But as my kids are grown up the family car days are behind me

Re: Road tax, anyone know 'why' it changed?

My little Citroen C2 is £255 a year and its 20 years old this year so only another 20 for no tax. As it is I have owned it 17 years and would replace it but there is nothing new I would like to replace it with within my budget, I don't want an SUV or crossover (mini SUV).

With that the car is full depreciated so the cost per year is tax+MOT+servicing (I mostly do it myself) so the average cost is £350 a year which even with a cheap/no tax newer vehicle will cost more than this in deprecation. Of course it may eventual cross a line of rising maintenance costs but so far so good.

I've never actually needed to commute in a car so previous 'dailies' (only cars) have been a Porsche 924 Turbo & a Smart Roadster. Heading towards 40 and after putting up with a Dacia Sandero and a sore back on long journeys due to the little one we were due a change. Sadly the only compromise my other half was willing to make was my enjoyment! 5 doors, 5 seats, room in the back for the in-laws, large boot... if only she could actually drive. Anyway enough domestic moaning, day off so time to hoover and dust the house
Sounds like you want a Skoda Superb. I've got the 220 TSI, and it's rapid enough, but I'm hankering after a 280TSI 4x4. More room than you can shake a (big) stick at, £190 a year tax, comfy, and a massive boot. If you get one with active suspension, you can have some fun, although they aren't known for spirited driving...

My wife's just bought a Merc SL350 on a 57 plate, £250 a year insurance and she does low enough miles to not worry about MPG. I told her to check VED, £700! She'd got the bug then though, and bought it anyway.

Ouch, you should fit a coin slot if it's only being used infrequently. Or tax by the month and get all the driving done every other month...

MR2 is the fun car atm, sadly it's got rusty and needs to go - I got motivated to try and sort it myself and set aside 3 evenings this week but only ended up being able to have a look last night, then can't shift any of the suspension bolts under it myself. Also two seats means it's rarely driven, must do <5000 miles in total in both cars and averaged <500 miles in the MR2. Track days also haven't materialised as planned in the last couple of years for various reasons. A dilemma, and if I had another £10k in the bank it would be a more fun dilemma!
Fun car + practical is a nice plan if you can afford the dual tax + insurance hit of it. I was running a GT86 and land cruiser combo for a few years but sold my GT86 earlier this year in favour of something even less practical. I used to really value the extra space the GT86 had over other sports cars with the folding seats, but since getting a bigger second car it's just not been a factor.
