Why, oh why, do I do this.....

Spent sunday helping my mate prep his Mk2 escort for MOT (Complete with 2litre DOHC transplant - a whole other thread there...). Now lurking up the roadway, was a forelorn looking mk1 MR2. Looks like it had been driven up a kerb (front skirts took a pounding), one rear quarter and rear bumper had a knock too. Noticed that the tax was about to run out too, so suddenly in my mind its in that "£50 guv'nor" price range and I'm lusting after it!

Now the sensible side of me knows that it would be a right royal pain in the bum; It's GOING to be a rot box; It's probably had years of abuse and it'll all end in tears. Yet I still want it.

I know it'd be a far wiser thing to buy a pristine example for a couple of grand; But a £50'er is more appealing.

My last MR2 fell aprt around me; this one's an older model, with extra years on the clock - Yet still I want it.

On top of it all, I DON'T NEED THE DAMN THING. I've a nice practical daily driver, I've already got 3 long term project cars - But I STILL left a note on the windscreen.....

Am i just a car junkie? Do you think I could apply for some sort of NHS therepy?

I wish there was.... I keep seeing cheap but 'interesting' dooerruppers and think 'what if' but Ive managed to clean my garage and drive of the 6 I had built up over time to just the £150 super shed mondy and 'tha thing'.... though the missus wants a classic as her first car
Lets rise above this oppression, Petrol Heads unite, together we shall rid the roads of 'dooerruppers' and amass them on our drives - viva la revolution

Definatley don't want a t-bar; 15 years old rubber seals above my head? No thanks!

plus the coupe's are a little stiffer too - Although 15 years of rotting probably won't help! (as I'm sure Rave will testify!)

Not heard anything from the note I left (phew!) but still have 3 that I'm watching on ebay.....

Yes, I can testify that new sills completely stopped the crashing and creaking I used to get going over potholes and speedbumps! The T-Bar was apparently fitted with a front strut brace as standard, which doesn't say much for the stiffness of the shell- I'm on the look out for one to fit to my coupe.

Anyway, good luck. If any car is worthy of being rescued it's the MR2, it always makes me sad to see them in breaker's yards. One day I will learn some basic mechanical skills, and try and do up a few cars myself- need a garage first though.

Oh man that's mint....and expensive. If it's true what he says in the auction that Jap MR2s were galvanised and UK ones weren't....that's nuts!
