Unhappy £100 in my sky rocket..

and i ended up with a vw polo

the vulva broke down in bath, and with 2 of us, lots of luggage, and no way of getting home at 6pm on a sunday, i popped into the first newsagents i found and got a free-ads paper. underlined all the cars under £200 in bath, phoned them up and got a polo for £100. its got 5 months tax on it, 6x9s in the parcel shelf, but only 1 months mot. the front wheel bearing is gone, and went from noisy to plane dangerous on the jouney home (more of that in pitstop forum), but she runs quite nice and is surprisingly quick for just a 1l car. a bit of a mess mind, but i recon if i sort the wheel bearing and i'm able to get an mot on it, someone will give me £150 cos its a cheap reliable run-around...

there were loads of other cars that were suitable in the paper, but each one was discounted for some reason - bimmer 520i which has a h/g problem (shame, it woulda been mint for £200), mondeo with a gearbox fault (had gone), a fiesta (dont like festers), and a granada 2.8 (which had a failed starter). if i'd had access to ebay i'd have done much better, but i didnt, so i didnt..

Did it come with a full tank? My mate had to get from Devon to Kent in a hurry after blowing up his mondeo, he picked up some old banger for £50 wit ha full tank, was cheaper than the train.

    didnt have a full tank

i've had better deals in the past but i was in a sticky situation - needed a car within 2 hours and didnt know the area (so only got stuff that was in bath in the freeads, cos i had no idea how far everything else was away).

anyways, its got a pair of sony 6x9s in the parcel shelf (gotta be worth £20 or so?) and 5 months tax (£50?) so its not too bad..

the other car is in bath. current plan is to drive the polo back up to bath with bit to fix car, fix the other car then scrap/donate/get rid of the polo somehow..

Polo that age has no brake servo so it musta been an eye opener to start with

Good economy, keep the oil CLEAN and new and the engine revs are irrelevent. The only thing really is the wheel bearing which is a bench press job really

do you *have* to use a bench press? i've not got one (i thought in most cars the bearings came in races etc)..

also, no brake servo - you sure? it stops ok, doesnt seem to need any more power on the foot than any other car i've driven, but i may be wrong..

right.. you were right about no brake servo

the haynes says it could be the ball joints as well as the bearings - how do i check em?

    edit : pics here - http://www.5lab.co.uk/pics/car/polo/

the driveshaft is fine (no wobbling without the wheel), i guess the cv boot is the black rubbery thing thats split (does that make it fail an mot??) - i've tried to show the movement in the wheel, but it hasnt come out too good. its about 1.5 cm side-side at the top. the brake disk moves, but not the caliper.. how much d'ya think a garage would charge me to solve it?

the car is pretty solid otherwise, its dented, and a bit bruised, but a good polish would do wonders i think. the only rust i can find is the front valance, which is non-structural, and the exhaust isnt blowing at all. i'd need to get the side indicator repeater before the mot, or i might be able to cover the whole up cos the front indicators are visible from the side - is that right?

the front tyre is obviously very bald on the inside - i think thats a sign the bearings have been dodgey for a while - but its actually legal imo..

Go to NASS by any chance 5lab?

You weren't the only person whose car decided to die on the way home, we were only 25mins from home when my car started to overheat. had to wait 2hours for RAC to turn up and attempt to patch rad hose. which only got us another 1/4 mile before overheating again so we had to wait another hour + for a recovery truck to tow it home. So glad my mum added me to her cover now.
