The Government has launched a new crack down on uninsured drivers, and can now fine offenders automatically rather than wait for them to be caught at the roadside by police.

Road safety minister Stephen Ladyman has detailed proposed changes to the forthcoming Road Safety Bill, which will make it an offence to own a car that is either uninsured or officially registered as off the road. Offenders will face a fine and could have their car confiscated and crushed.

The proposals form the latest element in the Government’s crackdown on uninsured motorists. In July, the police gained new powers to seize and destroy offending cars, and in November new automatic number plate recognition cameras will start spotting uninsured vehicles. It is estimated that every motorist pays an extra £30 a year as a result of uninsured cars on the UK roads.

Ladyman said: ‘The vast majority of motorists are rightly fed-up with the small hard core of antisocial motorists who drive without insurance. These new measures will mean that there is no hiding place for uninsured drivers.’

wtf, made an offense to own a car which is off the road? i think they've written that down wrong surely?

That doesn't make sense, that means they could just remove the car from your property. Surely that's not legal?

I think it will only auto fine you if your car has not been declared as SORN.

At least, i hope so. I can put whatever the hell i want on my property and no copper aint gonna come take away a project / rebuild car for example without a damn good fight!
