    Lowest Legal Tread on a Car Tyre

    what is the legal tread on a tyre is it 3mm? and is it 3mm in the centre point i presume

    its all over cos if you under/overinflate a tyre it wears unevenly. not sure what the mesurement is thou - phone kwikfit and ask

    goto shell, fill with Optimax and get the tyre tread reader free from the woman behind the counter.

    then measure.

    its not 100% ... but its a rough guide.

    Legal limit is 1.6mm over the central 3/4 section of the tyre and on the FULL circumference.

    Makes NO sense at all since the biggest chance of losing grip is when you CORNER and when you corner its the outer edges of the tyres that grip more compared to the middle of the tyre as the weight shifts over.....

    Hmm, biggest chance of having an accident though is if you lose traction while doing an emergency stop, so it makes some sense.

    A Quick & Easy test a mechanic told me was to use a 20p coin, the border around the edge is roughly 2mm. If it's less than this, i'd be changing it anyway.
