210 bhp Aero is economical too

    Well....it's hit 4000 miles now

And it is amazing on fuel. I cant begin to explain how shocked I am. If I reset the trip computer (which have checked against actual fuel used and it's accurate) and drive simply across a busy town, never exceeding 30mph and constantly getting stuck in traffic, it returns a happy 28mpg.

If I reset the trip and drive 250 miles round a busy M25 up the A12 to Colchester and back, as per yesterday, including sitting in traffic for 20 minutes totally stationary, it gives 37mpg!

And if I drive ultra carefully, using cruise control as often as possible, and reset the trip at the beginning of the dual carriageway, and do 100 miles at 70 it gives 44mpg!!!!!

On average, if I beat it with a stick and scrabble my wet way to 6k with each gear change, so long as I lift off at the speed limits, and dont hold low gears for no reason....it does 32mg!

I'm absolutely amazed! Anyone else with 210bhp 4dr saloon with tht kinda fuel consumption?

    Damn right....every 9-3 Aero drivers I've met!

Mutters something about turbo and if you don't push the turbo its a small economical engine.

Last fuel economy figures for my car

    500.1 Miles since 12/11
    two fill ups...
    20.64L
    47.53L

Works out at dead on 15 Gallons

    MPG 33.333

Thats loads of cold startup driving, heat on full, demist on full, not much motor way driving and not hanging about.

But underneath it all its a 1.8L engine, its efficient.

40+mpg on motorways at 80 is easy, i love my turbo

would be interesting to compair it to the A3 Sportback with the 2.0 Turbo FSI engine (same as the new Golf GTI) it is supposed to be pretty economical. I guess the 6 speed box would help on the motorway too though.

(this is the car i have wanted for mor ethan a year now. But having said that, i also really like the 9-3 aero )

Our mondeo 2.5 V6 auto 170bph only manages to average about 30 max over a long trip (small back roads + towns + motorway etc). Normally gets about 26/28. Nice figures on the saab!

zak, the only thing i'd say is check the accuracy of the trip computer manually (put some fuel in, zap the computer, do some miles, fill it up, see how much you used) - they're notorious for over reading to give owners more satisfaction

Hehe, the Saabs are great, aren't they?

My dad used to get similar sort of figues (although only up to about 40 when cruising) in the 9.5 Aero. Never much lower than 30mpg at all, just like yourself.

The new car struggles to match it for economy, and is a lot slower. Ho hum.

My car won't do much about 25mpg at all, but then again there's not much difference between the economy of cruising and of caning it. Well, as much as you can cane an old car with only 4 gears.

Impressive mpg - unless you have turbos on max boot, they tend to do pretty well. Must be all that torque wafting you along....

Can't remember the exact details, but didn't the Top Gear mob drive an Audi A8 from London to Scotland and back again on a single tank of petrol?

Yeah, London to Edinburgh and back

It was the big A8 4.2 diesel. Perhaps not the most economical car in the world, but pretty impressive considdering the size of the thing. I think it has a mamoth sized tank though.
