Numberplate rub out

When advertising my car either online or in autotrader etc should I blank the number plate out? if so why is this done?

It's probably to stop ringers grabbing your number plate and then flogging on a revived or cut and shut job.

Or simply to stop people getting numberplates of your reg and driving in around London and you getting the charges
