if you look at the graph i linked, there is a little dip-then-bump on the torque curve - this is what you're feeling, but it doesnt continue - before and after this the line is pretty similar. i recon honda maybe engineered this in because it gives a feel for when you're on power..

A careful launch at 5k and you are straight into the power band, then you should stay there until you hit the middle pedal. You just have to know how to use the engine to get the best from it.

Back in the day (i.e. the original B16 engines) the VTEC change over was aggressive to emphasise the feature. It was a selling point. These days as mentioned, it's more subtle but it's still there.

Now why in gods name has this 'cv65user' chap been going around digging up all these old threads?

The VTEC's I've driven (Type R Civic, S2000 and older CRX VTEC, plus Prelude dream car 2.2 animal) I can feel it each and every time.
TBH Without seeing the power graph I'm not going to comment further, but I've been taken for a spin in a few of the "new" CTR's and a CRX Del sol with the 160 BHP 1.6 engine and have test driven an S2000 and I'd say that might be in the mind as there is a definate change in engine note.
In the CTR brochure, they really do emphasise that the switchover point is at points of identical torque meaning changing it can only reduce performance.

Edit - I've just had a thought - if the switchover point - the point at which torque would be identical on either profile is where the low lift cam is really starting to die off and the high lift cam is starting to pick up, there will be a slight increase in acceleration immediately after the switchover point. If it is there, its not much though or I'm sure I would have felt it.
However making the VTEC kick in later will make it more of a kick, but you'll lose a bit of torque you could have had earlier to get that kick. If it kicks in too early, acceleration will reduce at teh switchover point and then increase, meaning you lose torque for a small part of the rev band.
