car wont tick over

My dads car goes fine except it stutters in low revs and wont idle at all. It's a Rover 214si, L or M reg I think.

We're gonna check the plugs n that tomorrow, but does anyone have any ideas as to whats to up with it please?

It's been getting worse and worse over a period of weeks.

When was the last service?

Air filter, oil filter, plugs, oil and fuel filter. Will take a mornings worth of work for a home mechanic.

If it won't idle at all and cuts out (unless you're reving it) check the inlet path.. sometimes the gaskets go and you get a leak.

could be the chip failing? it sounds like the engine cant cope @ low revs which i'd guess is likely to be related to the electrics. but not sure. if it were my car i'd just winkle the carb some more.. does it do the same with high-octane fuel?? also try shoving in one of htem fuel injection system cleaning products you can get from halfords (just goes in the tank iirc)
