I always thought that the Vaccum ran off the engine anyway, so if he shut the ignition off, the engine spinning would still keep them pumped.

Have you ever seen a car that does this?
They dont because generally when you need the brakes you haven't floored it

Secondly there wont be much of a vacum between the air filter and the throttle butterfly.

depends how efficient the air filter is..

on dervs the vacuum runs off a separate pump (i think)

either way, hbrake would still work, and if you got it to lock the rear wheels for a sec, it'd stall the engine, jobs a goodun

I think, details aside we all agree that the guy was a prick, his non survival would benefitted both the economy and the gene pool, and that he could have killed the ignition without any more dangerous results than leaving it on.
One final thing. When he realised teh throttle was stuck, why didn't he go to the hard shoulder and just jam the brakes on. at 70 MPH even working agains the engine the car would stop before the braked faded.
He should be chraged with gross negligence in teh same way any other prick that makes stupid decisions that result in very dangerous situations would.

I ocassionally find myself changing gear without the clutch, just all about timing, how this guy couldn't do so in an auto is beyond belief. As for BMW sticky accelerator pedals, my dads began to stick, however it wasn't permanent it just didnt move so it would take longer to pull off the power, simple trip to the local dealer sorted out the fault.
