    Bmw 535d

Interesting one. Had a bit of a fight with one yesterday on a private race track. Didnt realise these big fat oil burners were so fast. Stuggled to keep it behind me up to about 130 then we both ran out of race track. He got a bit of a jump on me at the start but then i seemed to pull out a couple of car lengths.

On doing a bit of gogling, I can see why! 272bhp / 413lb/ft torque. And a reputed 391lb/ft torque at 1500rpm - I can see why he got the jump on me initally.

Impressive! One of them in estate form would be a near perfect load lugger for me.

They are actually faster than the 530i and more refined. Just a shame about the looks/the interior (yuk) and the stupid iDrive system, oh and the badge. Other than that, what a lovely engine.

Great cars, you looking new or second hand? if second hand i would go for the older model 2000-on personally, because I like the looks better and no I-drive or related tech.

btw, what do you drive atm?

The older model may look nice etc but there was never a 535d for the E39. The older car was a 530d, whilst this was still a really impressive bit of kit, the E60 535d is in another league. The E39 car's engine will be a real dissapointment in comparison.

Awesome cars. Not had the pleasure of the 535d but I have driven the 530d M Sport (06 model) and it was absolutely fantastic.

As is the 02 530d SE I often get to drive

Now, I'm a die hard E39 (96-03) fanboy and I hated the looks of the E60 but I must say with the M Sport models standard bodykit it does look really rather good. I found I-Drive utterly pointless, however.

Although the 535d is epic in the performance states, the 530d is no slouch either and only the most extreme of drivers could be left wanting with its performance. It's also easily mappable to around 240bhp. The midrange acceleration in the 530d is just staggering for the sort of car it is.

Interesting, you say you'd be dissapointed by the older engine, actually although the E60 530d has a new block, the E60 535d actually use the same block as the later E39 530d - with the additional extra turbo

It is the same block but has masses of other changes to electronics, valves and a whole whost of other areas. Makes all the difference, I have driven hundreds of different BMW's (used to work for Cooper) and there really is a difference between the new and old. Not saying the old engine is bad, it is brilliant, but once you try the new car you wuoldn't want to go back (apart from the whole styling issue).

The thing that makes this diesel so special is it has 2 turbos, one big and one small. This means you get the extra power throughout the rev range

Look at the hideous torque curve for the 535d:-

...and look at the lovely flat torque curve of the petrol 530i (and the lovely wide power band):-

Sure, the 535d has lots of power and torque in absolute terms but as with all turbo diesels its going to have hideous non-linear power delivery characteristics. They might as well do away with the throttle and have an on/off switch for when you want the car to accelerate (since its going to be the turbo that decides and not you).

i drive a turbo diesel and dont really struggle to decide how much the cars going to accelerate.. given that the derv in question has more torque at every point in its curve compared to the petrol's max torque, it'd probably be possible to add a chip (if you wanted) to flatten it

also, those graphs are useless, as graphs go. the scale has been edited on the diesel graph to make it look as if the torque range is much greater than on the petrol, when in reality the max torque is ~160% of minimum compared to 130% for the petrol.. anyone can produce graphs to lie, it's just bad maths.

The scale on the diesel graph is terrible, and 470nm at 4k is plenty. Also the 535d can be tuned to deliver a much flatter torque curve.

More importantly, revving your petrol 6-pot all the way to 7k each time will drink petrol to deliver its flat torque curve, where as the 535d's can be used without smashing a long trip's mpg.

...but it's more fun to rev to 7k+

Driven both? I have, and although I'll be getting the petrol 530i not the 530d, I'm under no illusion as to which is the best - it's the diesel.

    Only reason I'm not getting a 530d myself is I can't afford a nice facelift Sport. I can with a 530i.

Not at 5000 RPM and above it doesn't!

    Thats certainly true.
