with no NCB and no long term driving experience, get a car you won't be afraid to lose in an accident, and which will be in a low insurance bracket.
fiat panda or similar is ideal. anything less than 1.3 litres should keep it below group 10.

You can get 2L motors under group 10. 10 is pretty high for a new driver.Originally Posted by atrull
Gotta admit as someone who threw himself in at the deep end at 17 (1.8T 4x4) I found a couple of ways of getting the Insurance down
1. Put a Female Parent/Relative on the policy - This took £400 off my first year in the A3, and then continues to today with my Girlfriend on it (Although it's now only saving about £90). DO NOT MAKE THEM THE MAIN DRIVER, Just a second.
2. Pass Plus - Trust me, with the right insurer it saves loads.
3. Parking - If you've got a garage, Use it. I actually managed to scrape about £140 off when I said it was parked behind a wall with a Van blocking the exit, as it would make life a lot harder for who ever wanted my A3.
4. Drive Carefully - Try not to crash, don't speed, basically drive like a granny for the first 3 years, then once you've got sufficent NCB you can start to live a little.
