    Question Motorcycle test

    Hi,
Please can anyone tell me what, exactly, the motorcycle test involves? For example what sort of questions are asked in the Theory Test, and what are the main points they watch for during the 'riding' test? Anyone passed recently who can help please? Any information is appreciated. (I'm going for 'direct access' 600cc etc..)
    Thanks

For the theory test I would imagine you will have to know the same things as if you were learning to drive a car. Probably a few different things though.

Buy yourself a theory book, I've got one for driving and it looks very useful. When it comes to me taking my test I know I'll get through it easily.

I'm with XA04, get the theory tesy questions book, it's invaluable and your going to need some way of practising the Hazard Perception part of the test so get yourself a good practice disk....

In the meantime have a look HERE at the DSA website and register so you can practice the free mock theory tests for car and bikes

It's a mere nine and a half years since I did my bike test, so take my input with a pinch of salt. Anyway, in my day the bike theory test was slightly different to the car test, but you only had to take one of them (when I turned up for my car test a couple of months later they spent about 10 minutes ascertaining that my bike theory test was valid, this was in the early days of the theory test system ). As for the bike test itself, it's very similar to the car test, the only difference AFAIK is that the set manouvres for the car test like the reverse park/reversing round a corner are replaced with doing a feet up u-turn in the road; you still have to do an emergency stop (which I did in the wet on my bike ).

I passed my bike test first time, but took two attempts at my car test when I took it two months later. I still think riding a bike on the roads is easier than driving a car.

It's a long time since I took my test. <gloat>I had to ride around the block and the tester walked across the block, there was an alley thru the houses, so he got to see me go round a roundabout, pass some cars parked outside a school and come to a T junction. What he didn't see was me chasing the poor lad on a 250[ I was on a combo] in front of me.. when I got =back to the test centre he said somthing like "we used to nick those bikes off the yanks when i was a desert rat etc...I have to tell you" obligotory gap"you have passed your test"</gloat>
I would imagine it's pretty much like a car test, car tests were more difficult in the past as you had someone observing all the time.. good luck with it...

I found the bike test an absolute doddle. The car test was another matter passed second go though..

Only thing different is they have a hazard perception test where you sit in front of a pc for an hour they show you video's and you have to click on the screen when you spot any hazard

It took you an hour? gee- i'd finished in 20 mins. (both hazards & theory questions)

Ontopic - the uturn is perhaps the hardest bit, and even that is pretty easy with practice

I was in Washiongton and some bright spark decided we should get drivers permits.
To get the permit you had to take a theory test. The test was a mulitple choice form with 100 questions, you fill in 30 and have to pass 25. You could get the form and go and get an Adult fill it in, or just fill in thirty and when you fail go to the end of the que and have another go....

Well smart arse, if you know the setup of the place they give you an hour for it, please enlighten me with your wisdom where I said "I" did the test in an hour, let alone where "I" have even done the test, so before you start spouting off read what people write

I passed a test in Ireland. One thing I had to practice was a u-turn, you have to go very slowly and you cant put your feet down, so its all about balance for that.
Your lane position is quite important, especially for right turns. The guy followed me in a car during the test.
I never done a theory test, so cant help you there.

Theory and HPT test - get the 'official' CD-Roms - keep doing practices over and over till perfect. Don't bother dlearning theory - just to the practice tests as its a load of trick questions that knowing the Highway code won't help you with.

Practical test is just a matter of knowing which lifesavers to do when and an obsessiveness with being at exactly the speed limit all the time and getting to it as quicly as poss. Good slow control is also important - get into practice using your back brake at slow speeds while keeping revs up. Its easier on a 500cc DAS bike than on a 125 to be honest - centre of grav much much lower.

Well I did my test 32 years ago. On a 250 Kawazaki and the examiner walked the streets while you drove around .

Passed my DAS test almost 5 years ago. Theory was pretty easy (no hazzard awareness test back then).

The hardest part of the actual test was the U-Turn. First you do it on the bike (tricky for a beginner tbh, then with nerves shredded and adrenaline pumping - you have to WALK the bike in a U-Turn too Easy for the 25cc brigade but for the 500cc+ buys like me it's a bit more tricky. I almost dropped it lol.

The other tricky part is the Emergency Stop - gotta concentrate on NOT locking up the back wheel....

Apart from that - you need lots of very exagerated "looks into mirrors" type movements, "life-savers" (looking over your right shoulder), and generally making it obvious that you are paying attention to things around you.

    I passed first time

yea, I know they give you an hour for it - seems a bit excessive, but hey
