67k miles, it's when things will start to go wrong. But that one has got a decent service history so it's probably OK

We have had 3 cars in the family so far, bought at around that mileage. Yes things do go wrong occasionally, but so far I've been satisfied with reliability and the saving I make should cover any repairs that may arise. There are a lot of preludes sold with 100-130k on the clock (a lot of them for similar price to this one too), so they seem to last quite well. Add to that Honda reliability and 67k won't seem like much.
If a car has been looked after, with a service history, I don't think it would give me major trouble.
I budgeted 4k for the car, and this 3k car was one of the very best I've seen so far (even compared to ones costing 4k). I can't justify spending 5-6k on a car either.
Of course if you offered to cover the difference I would gladly accept the offer and buy one with lower mileage.

Fair enough

nonsence tbh. modern cars do 100k without problem, and its rare to get major problems before 150k. my 185k renault-engined-beast had no milage-related problems at all - my 130k mondeo is showing no signs of wear. older cars used to get worn out faster, but modern cars just go and go and go.. if you look in a scrappy its always rust or a smack thats sent the cars thereOriginally Posted by Howard

Mine had done about 53K when I had to replace the exhaust & cat converter. I also replaced the cambelt but that's regular. Not all cars will do 100k "without a problem", that too is nonsense IMO

Thing is, I don't consider replacing exhaust as "things going wrong". Same goes for brakes and cam belt. Things wear out. The cat issue is a bit unfortunate i suppose, but you can't expect an exhaust to work forever. As long as the brakes for example don't actually fail I just consider replacing them when they are worn as a natural expense of running a car. Same goes for some other "consumables".

My 106 has 95k on the clock, bought it at 74k. Over the 4 years I had it I had to change the brakes, exhaust, cambelt, replace a driveshaft (cv joint went) and a few boots/gaiters for the joints, fixed an oil leak from the gearbox (from the driveshaft ends, perhaps disturbed the seals when the driveshaft was replaced), and early on had to change the lambda sensor and stepper motor (see the pitstop 306 threads - I was there first ).
This may sound as a huge list, but it was over 4 years, wasn't all that expensive to fix, and I'd say that a lot of it was routine replacement of consumable parts.
Now if I bought a much newer car I'd probably avoid the trouble with driveshaft and leaks and with the stepper motor. However I'd have to fork out a lot more cash up front, lose more in depreciation and still replace the brakes, the cambelt and the exhaust.
Throughout this time I was never stranded, nor has the car spent more than a day in the garage, so it hasn't actually "broken down" on me (touch wood).
I would expect even less trouble from a prelude, although I appreciate that the routine things would cost more to replace. But to me it seems that at 70k there'll be still plenty of life left in it

I'll say no more I just meant look for the lowest mileage one based on what yuo can afford

fair enough, but you've got to remember you had a fiat, and a small one at that. city cars aint built for the milage that motorway cruisers are - a prelude or a mondie are just that.. i personally recon the age of a car is much more important than it's milage - which is why i bought a 6 year old car with 120k on the clock.Originally Posted by Howard
the origonal fiat panda apparently had a clutch that went after 25k. their excuse? 'we only expect our customers to do 5,000 miles per year, so 5 years isnt too bad..'
