Most of that technology can be found on the automatic tourag doing the rallys across deserts without human intevention. Think the problem with the tourag was the inaccuracy of GPS. Their system was only accurate to a few feet which meant the difference between life and death on narrow roads
I flew an (almost) totally automatic airplane yesterday. A Cessna 182 with a Garmin G1000 glass cockpit and an auto pilot. The thing was amazing. Not only for GPS approaches but it could be set up to fly an ILS or VOR/DME approaches, or simple for intercepting and flying a radial. Just input the altitude, rate of climb/desent, etc, and watch it fly. It was fantastic! Of course a few feet make little difference in the air (apart fromtake-off or landing, which of course were not within the capabilites of this system), and this has little relevence to cars, or this topic, but I had fun, which is the important thing. And beer.

Its got the infrared stuff and so on which is meant to read the road surface (Road cones in this case) so it should be able to get through a straight tunnel without problems
