    UK Cars.....facts and figures

These will scare ya......you wonder why thereis so much traffic

    (source: SMMT and DVLA)

Total Number of Cars on UK roads : 28,483,961 (yup....28 and a half MILLION)

Average age of a car on UK roads: 6.9 years

Number of cars scrapped in 2002: 1,905,366 (nearly 2 million)

Average age of the scrapped car: 13.6 years old (which means the cars are getting older and older)

Average Price Paid to dealers for used cars in UK in 2002 : £5870

Total Number of Diesel Carson UK roads: 4,083,055 (not many huh, but then if average ageis nearly 7 years old, not many cars 7 years ago were muchgood in diesel variety)

Now that all means......not a lot really

but on average we areregistering well over 2 million per year....so the volume of cars is biggerand bigger...and getting OLDER

i dont think they're getting older mate - if the average of a car on the road is 6.9 years then i'd guess thats lower than say 20 years ago. maybe it doesnt take into consideration written off cars on the scrapped car age

You say that we are registering over 2 million a year, and we are scapping 2million a year, the average age of the 4 million cars is about the average age of the cars on the road. So net effect is 0.

The average age of a car is not rising or falling by those figures. However the number of cars on the road is due to 2 and even 3 car families.

It will continue to grow like this until someone does something radical to stop it, and NO taxes won't do fk all, we'll just keep paying for it.

Here's an interesting fact. I used Zaks #'s and the others are as close to same date as possible.

The UK has 250 registered vehicles per every 1000 people.
The US has 750 registered vehicles per every 1000 people.

The UK has 244,820 square kilometers of land.
The US has 9,166,000 squaer kilometers of land.

These are both registered cars, so it's the e quivelant since it's illegal to drivean unregistered car in the US.

    28,483,961 cars, UK.
240,000,000 cars, US. (couldn't find and exact #)

UK population- 59,200,000 (latest I could find)
    US population- 284,797,000

So- 59,200,000/28,483,961 = 2.08 cars per person in the UK

and- 284,797,000/240,000,000 = 1.19 cars per person in the US

    Then if you take-

    244,820 sq kil/28,483,961 cars = .0086 sq kil/UK car.

    9,166,000 sq kil/240,000,000 cars = .0382 sq kil/US car.

Pretty interesting post Zak Thought this stat was kind of interesting. Looks like the roads are a bit congested over there.

No wonder you guys drive small cars JK of course.

It seems like way too many cars over here anymore so I can see why you guys would be concerned TiG. Was looking at a stat on Urban roadways compared to amount of Urban area and it was pretty scarey how much roads take up a city. I've only been to Amsterdam in Europe and I was amazed at the number of bikes and the number of cars crammed onto the roads.

My Parents visited the UK (London mostly) a couple months ago and were amazed at the amount of cars and the way they all flowed so well compared to here. If we had roundabouts (my parents were amazed at these) in the US we'd have MAJOR accidents hourly.
Guess it goes to show our driving over here SUCKS compared to you guys

sorry but you've worked this out wrong:
"So- 59,200,000/28,483,961 = 2.08 cars per person in the UK"

    = 2.08 people per car aka : 0.48 car(s) per person

    also US:
    0.84 car per person.

Also helps that a HUGE percentage of the 9,166,000 square kilometers of land in the US is deserted.....

Thanks Josh Actually stated it backwards. I'm at work, what can I say

Yeah that does help Richie, I was just more taken with the fact that I didn't realize the UK was as densely populated as it is. That got methinking about how dense the car population is for the size of the country.

Don't know any exact numbers but that number for average car age is probably much older here. There's a lot of daily drivers that are much older than 13 years old. Most cars don't get scrapped here unless they're toalled in a wreck or just downright don't have any usable parts. Too many "backyard junkyards" here Of course all the numbers I've seen used for # of cars is for "registered" cars. Most cars up on blocks aren't registered.

how would that work? Also population density of the UK 244 people per square KM, US 30 people per square KM. Pretty cramped over here, south east england population density probably even higher, only one i could find higher by looking quickley was Holland 388 people per square KM. Driving in the US must be a pleasure with all that space.
